Printing a two-sided brochure

I am having problems getting a two-sided brochure to print properly. Each side is 3 columns, but the columns don't line up when it's printed. Side-by-side on the screen, the columns line up, each with a small amount of space on the far right margin. However, if you print them back-to-back, that small white space is then on opposite sides. This means the 3 columns on each side of the brochure are misaligned. Any ideas as to how to format this without re-formatting each individual column? The irony is that I used one of the included templates, but changed the content. I didn't change ANY of the column sizes/measurements, etc. So, logically, this should work without any tweaking! Help!

It probably has to do with the printer. Some printers need some extra margin one edge. Turn on Show Layout in the View menu. You will see a grey border. That is the printers default border which it need and where it wont print.

Could it be that you have on side with some extra wide grey border? When you print the second side of the document the border will probably be on the other side and the columns don't line up.

Thanks for your reply. I have "Show Layout" turned on; when viewing each page on the screen, the problem is immediately apparent, even before printing. Page one (the outside of the brochure) has grey area outside the right margin and page 2 (the inside of the brochure) has the same grey area, also on the right side. So, when printed, this "extra space" is at opposite sides; therefore, the columns cannot line up. In "Show Layout" the grey area would have to be on opposite sides in order for the columns of a two-sided brochure to line up properly.

Can you visualize what I'm getting at?

This seems to be an oversight in the actual template.

Thanks for any help in advance.

T,

You haven't understood what frudulda tried to explain. Your printer can't print to the edge of the paper. The printer driver communicates to Pages as to where this unprintable area is, and Pages displays the unprintable area as gray. It is not a bug or failure of Pages or the Template, although the Template may have been designed assuming that it would be used with a more generous printer.

It is not Pages having the "problem" but it is your printer giving you the problem. You have to make adjustments in the document or maybe you are turning the paper the wrong way when printing the second page.

By the way which template do you use? And which brand of printer do you use?

+A suggestion+: Open the document > open Inspector palette > Document tab > check button Facing Pages. Now I think you should see that the wider grey border will be to the right on one page and to the left on the other.

Besides the non printing area, you will find that all the 3 fold brochures are set up wrong.

The 3 folds can not be the same width and have the 3rd tuck inside. In printing you add 1.5mm or 1/16" to the front and middle page and take away 3mm or 1/8" from the outer page that tucks in.

But then the templates are not real they are just meant to look good on screen.

Thanks all for your various attempts at assisting me.

Jerrold: I tried your suggestion for borderless printing. Unfortunately, the print dialogue informs me that I cannot use that with two-sided printing in A4 size. I tried it without two-sided printing turned on and it still didn't eliminate the white gap at on both sides/opposite ends. I am using an HP 3210a.

Jerry: Now I understand what you and frudulda are talking about. I find it ironic that a printer which comes with a two-sided printing attachment and appropriate software cannot print to the right edge of the paper. Very odd.

fruhulda: I tried your suggestion re: the inspector palette, but it didn't affect how the document printed.

Very odd that the 3-fold template and a fairly modern printer with recently updated software (the most recent version is Oct. 2009) cannot print a brochure properly.

Any other suggestions? Thanks everyone for your kind assistance.

Here is a screen print of the brochure with the Show Layout turned on. I have an Epson and it demands the same margin all the way around (I can also print borderless). As you can see it is a minimal difference between left and right side. I also printed two pages and the discrepancy in lining is not more than the thin black line in the frames. So here it works well.

I once had an HP printer and had the same problem. Now please don't kill the messenger; you have two options, live with the problem or buy a different brand printer. What I did was design all my documents with half inch margins either all around or at the trailing edge (as the page exits the printer). Eventually I bought a new printer.

Sorry for the bad news.

Thanks for the image. It's essentially identical to what I see with my brochure in Pages. The only difference is that my brochure has a little more white space on the right side. Not much more, but a little.

I understand what you mean by the 'greyed out area' but I haven't seen that at all. I can cause that to happen if I select a paper size different from my default, such as selecting US letter when my default is A4. Since I haven't done that, the 'greying out' isn't the problem. It's the bit of extra white space on the right side. Your jpg has just a little, but mine has about double or triple that amount. But only on the right side.
