What is Autoplay?

Autoplay is a Windows feature that automatically launches a program based on what is in the attached device. You'll need to disable it for the iPod.

Attach the iPod and cancel out of the Autoplay dialog box when it pops up. In Windows Explorer, right-click on the iPod drive and select properties. Go to the 'AutoPlay' tab and select 'Take no action' for all the content types in the the drop down box.

This should allow iTunes to recognize the iPod and start up. Post back if you still have trouble.

i have the same problem, however, when i go into My computer to attempt to correct the autoplay problem, right clicking on the ipod drive only freezes my computer and i end up having to restart my computer...any idea how i could fix this?

just keep trying it, try just plugging in your iPod then, wait a bit, and then do right-click and properties. so basically, be patient when you plug it in, it's frustrating i know, but there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to access the properties of a device...but iPods are BIG trouble makers with Windows

Yup. I have exactly the same problem. My Computer just freezes up when I right-click the iPod icon. I then have to close down the My Computer window with Windows Task Manager.

What can I do? I can play the music I already have on the iPod, but I cannot connect to it with iTunes and I cannot connect to it with iPod Updater in order to do a restore. I have unistalled and re-installed all the software, reset the ipod, I've been round in circles... driven mad!

Can anyone help? I'd be most grateful.

I had this problem too. My advice is to take a large hamme, batter the living daylights out of your ipod, go down to the audio store and buy a Sony MP3 player or an iRiver

Thought about that!! Only problem is, I have around 35G of music, and most of its in the .aac format, and can't be played by those machines...

dont you have your music stored in your itunes library in original format????

Yeh, that format is aac, you know, the one that itunes uses by default, instead of mp3. Its supposed to be much better quality than mp3. The only problem is, only the ipod uses it, as far as I know.

Did you actually buy another music player? How did it go?

try changing the drive letter of the ipod
or putting t he ipod into disk mode before plugging it in
