SD Card vs. ExpressCard/34 slot

I know a little about SD Cards as it's a pretty common format, but can't say the same about the ExpressCard (34 slot).

I'm considering getting the 17" macbook pro over the higher end 15" version, but seeing this port spec, I'm rethinking the issue.

what is (if any) the advantage to this type of port over an SD one? any disadvantages?

The ExpressCard slot is much more "capable" than the SD card slot, leosag. (though an SD card slot has its uses too).

With the use of specific cards you can use the Express card slot to access a wide range of devices - fast eSata drives, add extra FW ports, SSD drives, multipurpose card readers (you can add an SD card reader to an Express Card slot, but you can't add an ExpressCard reader to an SD card slot) etc etc etc.

See http://www.expresscard.org/web/site/qa.jsp for info about Express cards and http://www.expresscard.org/web/site/cons_wtb.jsp for a listing of the sorts of things that can be attached.

Cheers

Rod
