Can't Get The Canon MP560 To Connect To WIFI

Hello. I recently purchased a Canon MP560, and I'm trying to get it connected to WIFI. I first installed the CD, then connected the printer to my imac with a USB cable, and with the cable, it will print, copy, and scan just fine. Id like to move the printer to a better location, so I need the wireless connection. I am running Leopard and using airport in my computer (my ipod touch connects wirelessly just fine). The instructions that came with the printer are mostly gobbledygook to me. The wireless connection on the printer is "ON". When I try to follow the instructions, I get to "Enter WEP Key". I don't know where to find that, or if I'm even going in the right direction. Any help would be appreciated.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.7), 20" iMac5,1, 2.16 GHz, Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB, ipod touch 16GB

Reading your post, you don't mention having a wireless router. The wireless in these Canon printers has been designed to work in infrastructure mode, which is when you have a router between your Mac and the printer. If you don't have a wireless router and you simply have the wireless (Airport) enabled in the Mac, this is known as ad-hoc mode, and the Canon does not support this type of wireless connection.

Thanks for responding. You are right, I forgot to mention the router the internet people installed next to my computer, so I can have high speed internet service. This weekend, I looked up my provider on the internet and found a way to get the WEP key. I installed it into the printer, and now I can print wirelessly, but.....I can't scan wirelessly. I tried reinstalling the printer CD, downloaded the latest drivers from Canon's site, but I get a message that the scanner can't make the connection. I've read that when you go into System Preferences>Print & Fax, you are suppose to see two different MP560s there, one for the printer and one for the scanner. I see only one (must be for the printer). I wonder what I'm missing here?

This scenario is for Mac OS X 10.6 only. With Mac OS X 10.5, the scanner was not part of the Print & Fax pane.

To add the network scanner, you need to install the Canon IJ Network Tool v2.70. This will create an icon in your menubar (on the clock side) that is meant to a scanner with a network cable connected to it. Personally I think it looks more like an art-deco chair.

Anyway, if you click on this icon, you will see Canon IJ Network Scan Utility. Select this to open this utility, which allows you to configure the MP640 as a scanner and use it. Once this is configured, you can then open a scanning application, like Preview, and select the MP640.

Actually, I had the network tool already installed. I clicked on it and went into Open Settings>Network Devices (which was the only pathway I could take) and added Canon MP560 Series_5F5053000000. I am still getting "Cannot Communicate With Scanner". WiFi is on. Firewall is off. Printer is set to Network and can still print with WiFi. I am using MP Navigator EX, which came with the printer, to try and scan. I can't find where to scan in Preview.

The MAC address of the printer you have shown is very interesting. I know that Canon has added more MAC addresses to their original address of 000085 (although the IEEE has no record of 5F5053) but for this device to show all zeroes after the OUI is unusual.

Since the network printer is working, can you confirm if it also shows "5F5053000000" in the Printers list (or 5F:50:53:00:00:00).

I believe it may be showing something different and would indicate something has gone amiss with the adding of the scanner.

A previous forum postee who was having trouble with his wireless Canon MP640 suggested that IPv6 was enabled by default on the printer and this was causing problems for the Mac client. He simply disabled IPv6, restarted the MP and all was fine. Since your MP560 is the same generation as the MP640, you may have a similar issue and the address we are seeing is related to IPv6. So, via the control panel of the MP640, you should have the ability to disable IPv6 and only use IPv4.

I did find the IPv6/IPv4 setting on the printer, but changing it did not help. I called Canon support today. I was reluctant to do that, thinking I would get a geek that I couldn't understand, but that wasn't the case at all.

First, I had to go to System Preferences> Print & Fax> Then I had to delete the printers I had listed. Then click + (add), go to "More Printers", then add the one listed. Next, I had to go into Applications> Canon Utilities> MP Navigator EX 3.0> Scan/Import> Preferences> Product Name> There were two printer types listed. One said "Canon MP560 Series", and the other said "Canon MP560 Series_5F5053000000". I was told to click on the longer one with the series of letters and numbers, then click OK at the bottom. The printer then could print and scan by WiFi. It all took about 5 minutes on the phone, and was surprisingly painless.

I was told that I should (if I wanted to) be able to switch back and forth between Wifi and USB, and the computer would recognize the different connections automatically, but I find that is not the case for me. Just about everywhere (like in System Preferences>Print & Fax, Sharing, MP Navigator, etc.) There are the two previously mentioned printer types listed. I am finding that if I want to print and scan by WiFi, the longer printer name has to be selected everywhere. If I want to print and scan by the USB cable, then the shorter printer name has to be selected everywhere.

Basically, it was a Canon problem all along. I pretty sure that some of these instructions were not included in the Canon manuals that came with the printer. After calling Canon support, it sounded like they knew exactly what the problem was, even before I started. Oh well, at least it's settled and everything is running OK now. I hope this thread helps someone down the road. Thanks PAHU for responding.

Thank you SO MUCH for posting this information. I had a slightly different long number at the end of my printer name (MP560) but it pretty much worked. I had to choose MP 560 Network on the Navigator screen and somehow another popup showed and I selected the long number. It's very frustrating that Canon can't just provide information on how to set stuff up to begin with! Now that it's all set up I love it and it works great! I also had to rely on these forums to download and install the correct files because my mac wouldn't recognize the disk 😟. Go here for that info: http://store.apple.com/us/reviews/TW941LL/A.

I had it set up as a printer first but it wouldn't scan to/from the computer, I found this thread when trying to get it to do that (printing was fine). You know you've got it set up when your computer name shows up in the canon printer screen when you do the scan to PC.

This is my first mac and I have found these forums to be really helpful so far.

Again - THANK YOU!

I seem to have run into a variation of this problem. My MP560 seems to be connected properly to the network, as I can print just fine over WiFi. But when I try to scan, I will get about 13% into the preview scan when the Canon will just hang. After a time, a window will come up advising of a communication error.
Any ideas?
I have all the drivers up-to-date, running OS X 10.5.6

I am using the TimeCapsule set in the Wireless Network Create mode, with Personal WPA2 security.
Where can I obtain the WEP? I believed that WEP is just another way of security settings, and the weaker one. Anyway, Canon MP560 recognizes the WPA2 mode and asks me for the passphrase, but refuses to connect after entering it.

Can you help me in some way?

I have the opposite problem and the printer doesn't show up. I have downloaded all the drivers and such and only the scanner works. The only problem is that I can't print to the actual printer. Same model and everything.
