Inserting symbols in Pages '09

I just purchased iWork 09, and discovered a problem. I could insert symbols in previous versions. Example would be greek pi, omega, etc. Just tried it for the first time,, and I can double click the symbol, or click the "insert" button, but nothing happens. Pages '09 help says "If the character doesn’t appear in your document, Pages may not support that character." Why are they listed and available to pick if "not supported?" Am I just doing something wrong? Used to be able to do this. These are not weird, exotic symbols! 🙂
