Hi

Setting the denominator in the time signature would require an 8/8 time sig.

A much easier way is to first set the Division value (below the Time Sig in the Transport) to 8, then go to Settings:Metronome.

In the 'Source' column, check the 'Division' box.

You may want to adjust the MIDI note and velocity on the righthand side.

Hi

The metronome would indeed click at 1/8 notes but...

Assuming that the original time sig is 4/4 (4 x 1/4 notes per bar), changing the time signature denominator to 8 would result in a bar of 4/8 (4 x 1/8 notes per bar ie half as long).

Changing the denominator with the playhead at any point other than bar 1 would result in a time sig change being created.

Setting the denominator in the time signature would require an 8/8 time sig.

This is where you lose me. Why can't you just type an '8' into the lower half of the equation, reqardless of the other number, and the perceived click sounds double time?

You could effectively do that if you wanted. But by doing that you actually change the time signature of your music to a signature that is not musically appropriate. If all you're doing is recording a song by yourself then it might not matter much, but if you need to print scores for musicians, then your scores will be weird. Also, just thinking off the top of my head (not sure about this, would have to check), setting your time signature to a x/8 time would make things like tempo locked delay fx play at double the usual speed too, which is obviously workaround-able, but cludgy. It's more elegant to adjust the metronome settings directly and leave the time signature to what it should be.
