Has anyone figured out how to attach custom icons to CDs?

I've posted a similar question before and I know others have, but I have yet to get a solution. Why Apple changed this in Tiger is beyond me. The old addage "If it isn't broke, don't fix it" comes to mind.

I have even tried to create a burn folder with a custom icon attached to it. But by using a burn folder I just end up with useless coasters. The burn folders just won't burn. So there is no way to see if this actually worked.

I'm stumped. Anyone have a solution? And hopefully Apple will fix this in the 10.4.4 update. I would love to be able to add custom icons and set the views correctly as easily in Tiger as I did with previous versions.

You might next wonder just how to save to an incs file 🙂

Before you rush out looking for some special software to do such You probably have something on-hand that will get the job done even if it doesn't show incs in the save dialog. Any software that will save/export to tiff is all you need.

Create/open the image in AI, PS or whatever you might have (Preview if you already have an image) and save/export as a your imagename.tiff

Then launch Terminal and type tiff2icns followed by a space and drag the tiff image file from Finder to the Terminal window. This should add the file's pathway to the command line. Press return. A file called your imagename.icns will appear in the same folder as the tiff image. Quit Terminal.

And now for the full nitty-gritty 🙂

Multi-sized icns file

Create tiff images in 16x16, 32x32, 48x48 and 128x128 bit sizes. You may also create 1 bit masks for the 16, 32 and 48 sizes (1 bit depth .bmp copies where black is hit area and white otherwise), or you can let the following utility do it for you.

In developer tools (free at Apple Developer Center) open the application /Developer/Applications/Utilities/Icon Composer and drag your respective tiff (and bmp if you chose to do them yourself) to the sized labeled boxes. Then save to Your_icon.icns and you've got it nailed.

The applicable developer instructions (which go further than you may need) can be found at:

This seems like a lot (well, not a lot but more than is necessary) to attach custom icons to CDs. Why in the world would Apple get rid of this (what used to be a standard and easy) feature? And as far as Toast, I don't quite like the way Toast burns CDs either. Actually the way Toast and Tiger burn a CD are almost the same now. And I even had trouble putting an icon on my disk with Toast, although I haven't tried it since early in version 6... I'll try the trick you told me of and report back.

Well, I tried your suggestion and it didn't work. In fact, now I'm having even more problems. This is the first burn I've tried since updating to 10.4.3 and now I get an error code of "0x80020063" when verifying. I toned down the burn speed to 8x and the error went away. But now not only didn't the CDs custom icon burn (using your suggestion of putting a .VolumeIcon.icns at the disc root but all the custom icons associated with my folders didn't burn. My last resort is to try and use Toast I guess to get the CD looking how I want...

This is so exasperating...

Toast is much easier. Here's how you do it in Toast:

1 Prepare your disc as you normally do.
2 Click More in the left drawer. The data disc settings dialog appears and the current disc icon is shown.
3 Change the disc icon. There are two ways to do this:
• Add a photo or other image file: Drag and drop a photo or other image file from your hard disk on top of the current disc icon in the data disc settings dialog in Toast.
• Copy an existing icon from a file or folder on your hard disk: Select the file or folder containing the icon you want to copy and choose File > Get Info. The Get Info window from the Finder appears. Click on the icon in the window and choose Edit > Copy. In the data disc settings dialog in Toast, click on the current disc icon and choose Edit > Paste.
4 Click OK.
5 Click the red Record button.

Lee,

Can you help with this ".VolumeIcon.icns" file. When I try to rename my xxx.icns file, I get an error message saying that "." files are reserved for the system. Also, where is the CD-R directory ?

I have tried all methods discussed in this string and none have worked.

Can I do this in finder, or do I have to use toast? I have never figured out what advantage Toast is over the OS X burner.

Thanks!!!
