Desktop background image when connected to projector

When I have a projector connected to my computer (without using display mirroring) the desktop background image for the projector display is different from the one on my laptop's display.

Is it possible to change the projector desktop background if the projector is not connected?

MacBook Pro 2.4GHz, Mac OS X (10.6.2)
