WIFI or GPRS with iphone

The iPhone is designed to have an always on data connection. When you are away from a wifi zone, the phone will automatically use 3G/Edge/GPRS.

First off, do you usually have 3G enabled? If you have, you won't know when it switches to that unless you are watching closely, (if for example you have a momentary wifi outage), Second ask for the proof.

Its also worth adding that when the phone/display goes to sleep, the phone will frequently drop off the wifi network as that takes more power than listening to GPRS and the data will use that connection.

The bil is pretty scary hence why lots of people have all inclusive data plans.

Exactly why I have 3G off unless I need it.

Even if you have 3G turned off, the phone will go to Edge or GPRS for data if the wifi disconnects.

Yes, but 3G will download significantly faster and hence cost you significantly more money no?

At maximum speed, yes, but a small 10kb file moved overnight will take 1s or 100s - makes no odds in practice.

You cannot practically avoid data bills with the iPhone - its a feature rich dataphone. If you cannot afford the large bills, then you need to invest in a Touch instead.
