What is disk mode and what are the benefits?

What is disk mode? I know how to enable it but im not entirely sure what it does. (I'm also wondering whether it will revive my iPod from the dead...)

a dead 4G 20GB iPod, 1G 4GB iPod mini, and Tunes 6!! YAY!!, Windows XP

disk mode is a method for using your ipod as an external storage device (like a hard drive)

As Jeff states, disk mode allows you to store whatever you want on your iPod's internal drive. It is not intended to allow the average user to "see" into the file system used by the iPod/iTunes system.
Enable disk mode if you want to use your iPod as an external storage drive. If you don't, then leave it disabled.
