I have access to my Hotmail account and have had no problems with it until now. I can receive messages, but can no longer send. I have not made a change to any of the settings, so cannot understand what the problem is. When I try t send a message I get this message; the connection to the outgoing server smtp.live.com failed. I am not particularly technical so am not really sure how to proceed. I have switched off wi-fi and restarted the phone without any joy. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Check with Microsoft, as it could be as simple as a server problem at their end.

In you Mail account settings under Outgoing Mail Server, try turning on the default SMTP server under Other SMTP Servers.
I don't have any other server listed. As I mentioned, I am not particularly technical so would not even be sure how to enter another SMTP server. It took me ages to set my current settings as it is!!!
Thanks anyway

So, to be clear, you cannot send email on wifi or 3G/E? If not, what is your Outgoing Mail Server in your Mail settings?
that's correct, cannot send using wi-fi or 3G. Outgoing mail server is smtp.live.com. I have even tried deleting the account and creating it again, which I have done, but still cannot send an email. I am truly stumped (and very frustrated)
Go here... Settings > Mail > account name > SMTP (tap SMTP to get to next screen). I assume your Primary Server is smtp.live.com? What do you have under Other SMTP Servers? I assume this is set to Off? Try turning it On.
Since creating the account again I have 'smtp.live.com' listed under other servers. It is switched on, but it doesn't make any difference. Strangely though, the server port number is 587 rather than 25 which is listed in the primary server.
Sorry for the delay. Seems that you aren't the only one with iPhone Hotmail problems. Here are a few sites that discuss this (some may be old)...

FWIW, GMail works very well on the iPhone, it's free and I can access it from just about any device anywhere. I know it's a pain to switch email addresses but the pain is relatively short-lived. You could keep your Hotmail address and just forward it to a GMail account. I made the switch about 2 years ago and don't regret it.

Everything was working fine and now I have the exact same problem.
Please help, thanks.

Add one more to the list that can no longer send.
Same here -- just started a couple of days ago. May have been around the time I downloaded itunes 9.0 late last week.
I have 5 email addresses attached to my iphone and I can send from all but the main one.

forgot to add -- when it does not send it says "sender address invalid" -- although nothing has changed regarding contact settings in the last year.
Got it fixed!
Got this from an old post (recommended from tech support since I was out of warranty)

Since the ITunes 9.0 upload I am no longer to send email via my pop account. Receiving "The server rejected one of the recipients addresses. The message has been placed in your Outbox". Per the email strings I have turned "ON" all servers, restarted my phone etc. to no avail. Please advise.
