I have the same problem as of this morning. Even when I turn auto-brightness off, the screen does not change up or down with moving the slider. In bright light, I can't see the screen at all. It happened without an alarm, just when I checked the phone after getting up this morning. I have done everything short of wiping everything on the phone and starting over.

Having a screen very dim could either be two cases either the phone was in contact with water or turn auto brightness off. Settings>Brightness = slide it up.
But you say that it is very black usually even if the iPhone brightness is very low you could still see it. Check in your headphone jack and there should be a piece of cloth or paper that is normally white.
If it ever comes in contact with moisture it turns pink.
