Not true. When you rent a movie through i-tunes, it sits in your i-tunes account under rentals, which should be an icon on the left menu of your itunes screen.

When you click on the rentals section, it gives you the option to move the movie to a connected device. If you connect an ipod or iphone, it will give you the option to move there. If your apple tv is showing up under devices, then clicking on rentals should allow you to move the movie to your apple TV.

My understanding is this is not possible, originally the plan was that you could load a movie from your computer to iTV but the movie copy right laws prevented this from reality. You have to download directly to your iTV.

incorrect.

you can rent form itunes and then "move" it to the appletv no problem.
moving a rental is different to syncing content to the appletv though.

what you can't do is rent a movie on the appletv and then move it to itunes.

It is entirely possible to transfer rented movies to an Apple TV. It's just not possible to sync from the Apple TV back to the computer when it comes to rentals.

For the original poster, have you checked for software updates on the Apple TV from the settings menu? Do both your computer and Apple TV have an active internet connection? You should see some kind of status bar to indicate the transfer is happening, or an error message to indicate there's a problem.

Are you sure about that? I'm pretty sure I've moved things that were rented through itunes to apple TV, and then back to itunes so they could be transferred elsewhere (like a phone).

I'm not sure about movies rented directly into the apple TV unit, because I've never done that.

rented movies that originated from itunes can be moved back and forth.
rented movies that originated from the appletv cannot be moved anywhere.

Yes, I'm sure. Once the rental is transferred to the Apple TV it is removed from iTunes and can no longer be transferred anyplace else.

Is renting through the Apple TV any faster than renting through the computer? I was surprised at how long it takes even with a high speed cable internet connection.

some appear to have issues with speed when renting/downloading direct on the appletv.

myself though i haven't found any difference and rented movies have been ready to watch within 60 seconds.
