Wireless Internet Connection troubles

Hello. Got my MacBook Pro last week and can't connect to the internet since then. At home I've got a wireless connection: a cisco system router (series 800 A) is connected to a 3Com access point (3Com office connect wireless 54 Mbps 11 g). AirPort does see the 3Com connection: I click on it (doesn't ask for any password), but it doesn't connect to it. Thanks for any help!

Welcome to Apple Discussions!

If either is password protected, you need to find out the protocol that it is protected under:

WEP, WPA2, TKIP are the most common and should be indicated in your router settings.

Once you find that, then you need to click on the User uploaded file* menu icon, and connect to Other... Pick your protocol, enter the network name, your username, and password, and it should connect you.

sligo_mm, Welcome to the discussion area!

How do I get to the router settings to find the password?

Follow the instructions in the user's guide for that device. Typically you would use your web browser to access the device's configuration pages.

...how do I know the network name? Is it supposed to be 3Com?

The current network name is the name you see in the AirPort menu. Once you access the configuration pages, you could change that name to something else.

Guys thanks for the help, but I'm still having problems. Here's what I did:

In the user's guide I found the default wireless setting:

password: admin
SSID: 3Com
Channel: 11 - 2.462 Hz

Then I clicked on Join other Network..., typed 3Com as Network Name and admin as password (it asks for the type of security and I said WEP password, is that right?), but it keeps saying "Connection timeout" and doesn't connect to it.

This said, I'm pretty sure the person who set my internet connection changed the password to protect the network. So the problem is, how do I get the password now?

password: admin

That is the password you use to access the configuration pages.

That is not the wireless encryption (WEP, WPA, or WPA2) password.

When you select to join the network, just pick the name from the AirPort menu. If wireless encryption is not enabled, you will join the network immediately. If wireless encryption is enabled, you will need the wireless encryption password.

I have a doozy for you guys. I've called Apple Support and they are stumped. This is my last attempt before re-installing my OS. Here's what's happening:

- I have trouble connecting to most non-secure wireless networks. According to my Network preferences pane I am connected to my chosen network, am assigned an IP, but I get nothing when trying to pull up a page in my browser. I can't connect to iChat nor my email.
- I do, however, have the ability to connect to most secure networks including my home, office and places like Starbucks.

I called Apple Support and they gave me a few instructions. None of which worked. Those instructions were:

1. Create a new Test Location in the network prefs
2. click the "renew DHCP Lease" under the network systems prefs
3. Turn airport off. Dump the Systems Config Folder.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
