itunes shuts down when syncing

so alls i am trying to dois add some music and photos to my iphone. Every time i go to sync i get a message saying itune has encountered a problem and needs to shut down, then is says windows will check for a solution but cannot find any problems. im running windowns 7, the most up to date itunes and the iphone 3.1.3 software. has anyone else encountered this issue?
