Just hoping you found a solution to your problem because it is EXACTLY the same problem I'm having.
If you have can you please give me some advice? I've gone through the troubleshooting links and turned off and on both my imac and iphone too many times to remember. I have the latest itunes, the latest OS, my USB ports are working, I can internet tether using my iphone and it appears in my imac network via bluetooth. It just doesn't appear in itunes.

For a little bit my iphone would connect, but if unplugged and reconnected it would act as you described until I rebooted. Now, even if I reboot I cannot connect. Itunes will either freeze when phone is connected, or simply not recognize it.iphone 3GS, iOS 4, vista

and then here...
those two things reinstalling the USB driver and then making sure that the Apple Mobile Device service was enabled seems to have fixed the problem.
Hope that helps you out.Gateway, Windows Vista
