clone via ethernet?

Please can anyone tell me if it's possible, using Carbon Copy Cloner, or any other method, to duplicate the entire contents of a hard disc (running Panther) from one iMac to another, joined by an ethernet cable - so that the 2nd iMac can then be used as if it were the first one?

with thanks

Yes, but not with CCC. CCC does not work over networks. However, Disk Utility has a Restore option that will.

In order to make it work you need to have the two computers accessible via an Ethernet network. You can effect that by either connecting the two computers with an Ethernet cable or you can use a hub or switch. The following articles will be useful:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106658
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106461

The second article talks about how to use Sharing in order to get the two Macs talking to one another.

An alternative is to use Firewire if both computers have Firewire ports and at least one of them supports Target Disk Mode.

This article discusses ways of moving files from one Mac to another:

Once you decide whether to use Ethernet or Firewire to connect the two computers (Firewire is a lot easier and faster) you will use Disk Utility's Restore option to do the actual cloning:

1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the the volume you want to backup or clone from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the ** main window.
4. Drag the the volume to the Source entry field.
5. Select the backup volume (the volume that will receive the clone) from the leftside list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Check the box to Erase Destination (this is optional but is recommended when feasible.)
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
