HI,

You can change the background of a Finder window. You don't need third party software for that.

To change a window’s background:

Open the window and choose View > As Icons.

Pictures and colored backgrounds are visible only when items in a window are viewed as icons.

Choose View > Show View Options.

Under Background, select either Color or Picture.

Color: Click the color box and select a background color.

Picture: Click Select and choose the picture you want to use.

White: Return the background to normal.

If you want every Finder window on your computer to have this color or picture as its background, click “Use as Defaults.”

OS X doesn't give users a way to modify the desktop to the extremes that Windows does. In fact, there isn't much you can change. Unsanity has some apps which could do that, but are completely broken in Snow Leopard. A deliberate change on Apple's part I believe since Unsanity's APE (Application Enhancer) software makes the OS unstable. In fact, I just read in Macworld magazine that Apple's engineers don't even read crash or bug reports where APE is part of the installation.

You can change anything if you are clever enough. But it can't be done by selecting and pressing a button with an app. You'll need Photoshop, Theme Park and Xcode. Hope you like hex editing. Also would be helpful to have some knowledge of permissions.

I am coming from the windows world too and I find that Mac OS-X is better for some things but is behind windows for stuff like this for example.

They should allow to customize windows frames, titles and borders. It also need a global system font size.

The first thing I did when I started on my Imac was to disable mouse acceleration, something that cant be done in the UI. You need to enter 2 commands in the terminal.app to do it. lol
