which AGP graphics Card to Buy

I have an 8X AGP graphics buss in a dual 1.8 G5. It runs on 5.5 gB of memory. I still have the original 5200 video card. I just bought a 24 inch NEC flat screen. I'm thinking of upgrading my video card to one of the flashed models I see on EBay, like the 7800 GS I've seen recommended other places on the mac discussion group..

I am a sound editor. My work involves a lot of Protools and also Photoshop quite a bit. I have a few concerns about getting a new video card, that I am hoping someone might be able to answer.

1. My 5200 card doesn't have a fan. All these faster cards have a dedicated fan. Noise is an issue when I am recording. Can someone tell me if a video card fan will add any extra noise than the fans that are already installed in my G5? Or should i expect, for example, a doubling of noise when i add a card? I notice that there's two versions of the 7800 GS, one with a copper fan, and one with a smaller aluminum fan. Do they generate the same amount of noise?

2. I don't play computer games. I don't do graphics modeling. I don't watch movies on my computer. However, the Protools screen is constantly refreshing as tracks move horizontally from right to left. Also, Protools takes every bit of computer power it can steal from the mac system. The main reason I would buy a new card is that I would assume it will take some of the graphics processing load off the CPU, with the result that Protools (and everything else) will work better. And look smoother. Is this a fair assumption? Or won't there much noticeable improvement, since i don't play computer games? Thanks for your help

There is nothing obvious in the windowserver log entries. The Entourage "error" is normal and often seen, as are others similarly during startup. The monitor is being configured correctly, it would seem, and the other, later errors are probably red herrings. For a second, I thought the ROM version was funny, but then I read again that you have the GT not Ultra, as the ROM version for the Ultra is 2130 which probably makes sense.

Any luck on verbose startup?

I deleted the microsoft database daemon from the account/login, menu.

I have also read the troubleshooting guide you posted. Thanks for that. I'll try a process of elimination of all the items in the Library/startup folder. I know what some of these folders are used for, but not all of them. I do not know any of these folders: Qmaster, trackdelete, retrorun, dyndnsupdater.

I also enclose here, the Console's system.log entries from this morning. I may have unearthed something, but I don't know how to interpret it. Note, in the entries, where the time suddenly changes from 5:59 to 6:59 with nothing in between. I am wondering if the freeze occurred at 5:59. As always, i wait some seconds to see if the G5 has indeed, frozen, then reboot using the startup button to turn it off, then on again. This second boot is always successful.

In this instance, the freeze MAY BE occurring during a process called "Matching service counts". What does that mean? What could make that stop?

OK, this is getting interesting. It took me a while to figure out that you had the two boots there, and I notice in the first bad boot some things that are interesting. First, as I would expect after an orderly shutdown, there is no journal replay, as opposed to the boot when you have forced the machine down and you did get journal replay. I also notice that NVDANV40HAL does not load the first time, which should be happening right after the matching services rigamarole. That guy not loading is definitely a killer for a proper boot with any Nvidia card. I suspect there is something left in the boot volume directory that is probably causing the problem, or maybe a cache file.

Have you used AppleJack? That can clean up a lot of crud lying around, like cache files that my be corrupted, etc. Worth a shot. Check for use and download information of this great freeware (donations encouraged) at this link: http://applejack.sourceforge.net/ .

Is this G5 running Panther10.3.x???

Jul 22, 2010 10:46 AM in response to BDAqua

My G5 is running 10.5.8

Before i do any of this stuff you two guys advice, I need it spelled out in a little more detail.

BDAqua, are you telling me to uninstall all of the Kensington stuff, and then reinstall it all again? Or will it suffice to first try emptying the Kensington cache, and if that doesn't change anything, to reload the driver. And then, third, try to purge my system of everything kensington?

OldCommguy, You are advising me, basically, to delete ALL my cache files. I already own "CleanMyMac which will do that task very well, and I seem to recall that this utility lets you choose app caches and/or system caches. I am presuming you mean both types. Correct?

What else can i try?

I will run CleanMyMac, and report back tomorrow if it makes the freeze disappear.

Thanks for your help.

Jul 22, 2010 10:55 AM in response to jim nollman

System caches are the area most likely to need cleaning. My guess, though, because there is a certain level of voodoo involved in problems like this.

One other thing to try would be a Safe Boot one time, which will essentially cause the machine to run fsck (I don't see that we advised that before) which might clear up any strange directory problems that are causing this situation. I suggest that because, again, the journal replay from the good boot is a clue pointing to something honked in the directory structure that isn't corrected in the boot after normal shutdown.

Jul 22, 2010 11:45 AM in response to old comm guy

thanks for the advice. yes, indeed, voodoo.

I ran Cleanmymac, which deleted 600 mb of caches, although it seemed to indicate that all of that was application cache, and none of it was system cache. I also had it clean up some other stuff. Then I uninstalled my trackpad using the proper Kensington uninstall. I started it in safe mode. Then i turned off the machine properly, and hit start.

It started the first time. First time in 3 weeks.

So then I re-installed a new trackball driver downloaded from the Kensington site, noting that it bears a date of 2006. It still started OK, but as soon as i got control of the desktop, the cursor froze. So I started again, uninstalled the mouse, and connected my original Apple mouse. It seems to work, although i need to try it over a few days time to make sure.

One other thing. After I cleaned all the caches, i noticed that it took an inordinate amount of time for the G5 to reboot. So is it slowly rebuilding the caches?

As i say the trackball is quite old and was bought when i was using cougar! I do love my turbo mouse pro, but maybe this is a sign that i need to bite the bullet and buy a new trackball. I'm sure Kensington will have nothing to offer me.

If the freeze recurs in the next few days, I'll update this thread.

Well, at first, it rebuilds what it needs because the cache files are not there to load, so it does take a little longer. As you activate things, caches will rebuild as needed. Clearing the system caches causes one annoying artifact, which is when you launch some applications, you will be informed that you haven't opened the application before and do you really want to open it. After you say "yes" you don't get the alert again.

Did you try the newer TrackBallWorks driver?
http://us.kensington.com/html/1385.html#trackballworks_mac

I don't know a lot about the Kensington line so I don't know if it covers your device, but at least it has a much more recent date (last month).

Jul 23, 2010 9:30 AM in response to old comm guy

Thanks for all the advice guys. I do believe the problem is solved. The computer now boots as it is supposed to boot.

I have an email into Kensington customer service, basically saying that the only driver they offer us trackball users is so dated it freezes my system. I realize that 6 years of mouse service is a long time in computer years, but who knows, maybe they'll surprise me.

Aug 7, 2010 2:03 PM in response to jim nollman

It's been three weeks since i thought the problem was solved. It is and it isn't.

i bought a new expert trackball. The old trackball was clearly PART of the problem, something in the hardware, maybe the USB connector.

The real culprit is the video, either the monitor (NEC 2490wuxi2), the flashed video card, or a combination of both. Basically, the computer ALWAYS freezes if i turn on the computer before I turn on the monitor. If i turn on the monitor first, it never freezes. That also explains why it never froze the SECOND time i rebooted.

Turning on the monitor FIRST, may be the only solution I'm ever going to get. That's OK unless something more permanent shows up. As I thought from the start, It is almost certainly some bug in the video card's flashed ROM.
