Convert word documents (.doc) on CD-Rom to Pages (.pages)

I inserted and ran a CD-ROM in to my white MacBook. I am running iWorks '08 and Snow Leopard (both are up to date). The CD-ROM opened in its Finder window 4 files each shown as Microsoft Word documents (.doc). How do I convert these 4 files to Pages? I have tried going to information and selection Pages with in which to open the files. I then get dialogue boxes telling me that the files can not be opened in Pages. Is there a way to work around this?

Not really sure.

(1) maybe these docs are issued from a 'recent' version of Word which is not treated by Pages '08.
If it's that, there is no workaround with Pages. You may use TextEdit or openOffice or neoOffice.

(2) maybe Pages is unable to import a .doc file from a read only device.
If it's that, copy the file on a read/write device.
I have no sample file available to make tests.

Welcome to Apple Discussions

If you're trying to open the files from the CD, that might be a problem. Pages may "balk" at opening a file from a locked disk (such as a CD or DVD) because it can't save any changes to that disk. Try copying the files to your hard drive first & then opening them with Pages.

First to Kevin and to Peggy thanks for taking the time to think about this issue and to give me your thoughts. What I've done since: I remembered that I have an old copy of Microsoft's Office for Mac 2004. So I installed the Word 2004 word processor. From there I was able to copy the 4 files to .doc format. From there I want to convert them to .pages because I want to uninstall Word. I could find no way to convert them directly and so saved them to Preview as .pdf documents. I hope I will be able convert them from either from .doc or .pdf. But it is late now and I've had enough for today. Thanks again for your thoughts - I'll keep after it.

First of all, Koenig excuse me for naming you Kevin in my last posting on this question. And in addition to thanking him and Peggy I now thank Adam White and fruhulda for their help. I did open the .doc files in .pages. I saved them to another folder. Here is what I found. Each time I try to open the main content files they take too long to load. This CD-Rom contains a specialized stamp catalogue of about 400 pages in 2 filles and contains 2 introductions in one file each. In addition there are slight changes in format when opening the .doc as .pages. So I have decided to use the .pdf files I had previously saved. Now I will uninstall Word for Mac 2004 and see what happens. Again I thank all of you and will mark this question as answered. Natey
