Interesting Mail "problem"

I try to send an email to someone on our own system. I know it doesn't exist and should return a message to me from the mailer daemon with the reason it failed. Instead it pops up a Window on the screen asking me to choose a different mail server and states that the user does not exist.

Here is the situation from the mail logs:

mailbe:/var/log# grep 'msd\[10374\]' mail.info
Mar 17 16:02:20 mailbe msd[10374]: Linux Magic SMTPD started: connection from 216.xxx.xx.xx

If I am using a mail client on Windows, a message comes back to the inbox stating:

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

Subject: test
Sent: 3/17/2010 4:06 PM

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

'otheruser@domain.net' on 3/17/2010 4:06 PM
550 User [+otheruser@domain.net] does not exist

Is there a way for me to get this same behavior on the Mac? It is actually more frustrating than getting a returned email.

Thanks,

Greg
