Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

How do you disable/turn off Faces???

Faces is automatically scanning and copying photos and eating up my CPU, it's driving me bonkers. Is there a way to disable this feature? I don't want anything to do with it.

Thx...

But they do. All you have to do is +say it to them+ not to other users.

And yes. I have Sent Feedback to Apple ...regulalry for over a year.

I know I'm not the only one making this complaint.
and I know I'm not the only one whose posts get deleted.

Wouldn't it be easier to fix the software then delete the angry posts?

How sweet you remember 😉

I know I'm not the only one making this complaint.

But the only effective place to complain is to the Developers - hence my suggestion to use the Feedback route. And I can't recall anyone saying that you are the only one. It's turns up here every now and then and we direct the posters to the only place where it may make a difference. It's called trying to be helpful.

and I know I'm not the only one whose posts get deleted.

Paranoid much? Seems to me that you have made 7 posts and all 7 are still online. So, perhaps you're the only one who doesn't have posts deleted.

I don't know if it's easy to change the software or not. But I do know that this forum is for Users to help other Users, and not a place for angry posts. Why do you think other iPhoto users want to read your angry posts when they're looking for assistance?

It's all covered clearly in the Terms of Use you memorised so thoroughly.

I can use the search function too.

umm, the posts are deleted so they don't show up. that's much the meaning of "deleted"

Terence I've watched you direct complainers to use the Feedback menu for over a year now. I have posted Feedback many, many times. Apple has yet to add a simple "disable" feature for Faces. If Apple can't add an "off button" in a years time then perhaps I can switch to Adobe LightRoom.
I'm happy to pay for software that works well.

Terence you provide good service to the posters here. I can only assume you get paid for this as you tow the company line too well. IMO you'd be more credible if you didn't quote the users' agreement.

Feel free to delete this post after reading.

You know you really should have a glance at the Terms of Use, they're really quite clear.

Have a look at my User Profile. It shows how many posts I've made and how many are still online. You'll notice a difference between the two numbers - they being posts of mine that have been deleted.

Right now, your total number of posts is 8 and you have 8 currently online.

Perhaps your mistake is to think that this is something that can be added with a point update. It would require a re-structuring of the Library, something that usually only happens with a version upgrade. Or perhaps they don't intend to make it optional. I have no idea.

If LR is the right software for you, use it by all means. Aperture 3 has an "off button" and costs less than LR.

I can only assume you get paid for this as you tow the company line too well.

Read the Terms of Use. I get paid nothing. I have no connection with Apple or any of its subsidiaries or anything else. You may have trouble believing that, but then that's paranoia for you.

And it's not the company line. It's simple. The forum is really quite good at what it does, and the reason it so is due to it's tight focus. It's for users to help other users with things that +Users can help with+. That's all. If you want to whine, complain, moan, rant or discuss anything else use a forum designed for those purposes.

I have exactly the same power to delete posts as you have.

I feel I need to spend the time to explain myself.
When Ap3 came out I watched every last intro video and excitedly downloaded the trial.
Finally, I thought, I worthy replacement for Lightroom.
I shot a wedding and imported 30 of the images into Aperture, just to give it a light test before dumping 1600 Raw files into it.
Quite honestly, it was devastatingly disappointing. I got the stupid beachball just by scrolling quickly through the images - all 30 of them. Everything I did produced the beachball.
It was horrible.
And this on a machine that Lightroom runs perfectly happily on.

Frankly, Lightroom handily eats Aperture's lunch and burps in its face. It has some flaws however, so after a jpg export I use iPhoto to quickly send off a low res image to a client, and other light tasks. iPhoto can display all my shoots easily and quickly (Events view!) and doesn't look like a dog's dinner, as Lightroom does.
But now there's the blasted Faces that throws a spanner in the whole thing.

Now, does anyone have any idea how to turn off Faces in iPhoto?

You can try this:

Disable Faces
1 - open the library like this.
2 - in the Database folder move these files to the Trash: faces.db and faces_blob.db.
3 - close the package/folder and launch iPhoto. Close it after a moment.
4 - open the package, find the new version of those two files and lock them via the Info window for the file.
5 - open the Data.noindex folder and type Command+F to start a search. You have to be in that folder for the search to work.
6 - set the criteria of the search to: Kind is Image and Name Contains "face".
7 - select all of the files in the search results window and drag to the Trash.
8 -close the package and launch iPhoto.

You will get the faces spinning wheel as it tries to index the library the first time it's opened but it won't be able to write to the database file if you should try to add a face and won't create any new jpeg faces files. You may have some blank faces frames in the Faces window but just ignore them.

Of course make a backup of your library before trying this and *no guarantee implied*.
