You might look at one of these as a replacement: http://eshop.macsales.com/staticpages/Framework.cfm?page=superdrive/sdl_powerbook_g4al.html or http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Panasonic/UJ875/ .
Here's a video on how to change it out: http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/powerbookg4al_17opt/
Here's written directions with pictures on how to change it (assume your PB isn't an Oct 2005/later model): http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-PowerBook-G4-Aluminum-17-Inch-1-1- 67-GHz-SuperDrive/248/1 -
Mar 22, 2010 8:34 PM in response to jozy65by Silly rabbit,Before you go to the trouble and expense of replacing the internal drive, do you really need to replace the internal drive? Do you use the machine as a portable? If not, a Firewire external DL optical drive will give you much greater performance and flexibility. I have a LaCie DL external Firewire optical drive and it is around four times faster than the internal drive and much more reliable. For example, the internal drive of my PB will take around 40 minutes to burn a DVD disc image with around a 30% failure rate. Whereas, the LaCie drive will take around ten minutes and never fails, plus it has duel layer capabilities.
