Remote Install OS X

I have a macbook pro and an iMac and i want to reinstall OS X on my macbook, i've tried the remote installer but my macbook doesn't give me the option to connect to a network, I was thinking of this "target disk mode" or something like that basically using firewire to use my iMacs optical drive but both computers have different firewire ports so will this be a problem? Or is there any other way to reinstall OS X on my MacBook.

I do not need to boot from the disk over a network, it boots fine I just want to reset everything back to new

Hi and welcome to the discussions. If you have a backup hard drive with a partition at least 10Gig, you can copy the install disc to the partition and boot from the external by pressing the "Option" key at boot. The external can be a usb drive.

If you need help copying the install disk to the external come back and we will help.

Hi Steven, and welcome to the forums.

You can use either a Firewire cable with an adaptor or an Ethernet cable, or even wireless (though it will be slow) to connect your two Macs for the purpos.

See the instructions in the "Using Remote Install Mac OS X" section of http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/Snow_Leopard_InstallationInstructions.pdf

Cheers

I have a similar problem. My mac is not booting and I want to install leopard snow from a different computers optical drive over ethernet (it's a PC). I followed the instructions from pdf, but when booting my mac book and pressing option key I don't see the option to select mac os x installation.
I installed cd / dvd sharing and I followed the steps in remote installer.
Computers are connected through ethernet cable via router with dhcp (at my work place).
Do you guys have any idea what can be the problem or maybe you can offer me an alternative solution.

Thanx in advance,
Kamil.
