What does SYNC mean re iPhone and MobileMe?

I'm getting duplicate Calendar events on the iPhone 3Gs, even though sync with iTunes is all set to OFF.

Looking deeper on the phone, I see I can view Calendars three ways--
All Calendars | All on My iPhone | All "mobileme account"

So it appears there's no real syncing going on. I can have a Calendar on the phone, or one on MobileMe, but they don't communicate. New entries on the phone don't show up on MobileMe, nor vice versa. All I can do is view each one on the phone, either together or separate.

Looks similar with Contacts.

Am i understanding this correctly?

You need to deselect sync calendars under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes followed by selecting Apply first.

If you are syncing iCal calendars/calendar events on your Mac with MobileMe and this data is correct with iCal on your Mac and with your MobileMe online calendars, on your iPhone go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Select your MobileMe account. Turn Calendars off for over the air syncing. A warning message will be provided indicating this will delete all calendars/calendar events on your iPhone downloaded from and being kept synchronized with your MobileMe online calendars. You should also get a prompt to save the calendars/calendar events locally on your iPhone. If so, decline this prompt.

This will not delete the calendars/calendar events on your iPhone synced direct with iCal on your Mac via the iTunes sync process.

Follow this by turning Calendars back on for over the air syncing. You will be provided a merge prompt, which you want to select, or if the calendars/calendar events are correct with your MobileMe online calendars and you are provided a replace option, you can select replace. This should get rid of the duplicates.

The same applies with contacts.

Prior to firmware update 3.0, it was possible to sync contacts and calendar events over the air with a MobileMe account or with an Exchange account but not direct with a supported application on your computer. It was one or the other, not both at the same time. Apple included the ability to do both primarily for those syncing business contacts and calendar events over the air with an Exchange account who also wanted to sync personal contacts and calendar events direct with a supported application on a personal computer at home. When doing so, you can view business and personal contacts and calendar events combined or separately on the iPhone with both kept separate.

When doing both with a MobileMe account only duplicates the contacts and calendar events on your iPhone.
