iMac freezes or runs really slow

I have now on several occasions run into the fact that mu iMac i frozen or horribly slow. I've, by using the Disk Utility, found out that on all of these occasions the hard disk have had several errors. Wrong number of files, bad hierarchy and so on. Disk Utility has been able to correct these, but after a while I'm into the same problem. What is causing this ? Should I worry about the hard disk physical condition. Luckily I've got TimeMachine running.

iMac 24", Mac OS X (10.6.2), 3GB RAM

Thank you! Went skimming through these, but can't see that I've missed something that would cause the disk errors (bad number of files, bad hierarchy..) which here is the reason to my Mac freezing. As said after the Disk Utility disk repair, my Mac is running like it should. I have also periodically run permission repair and done disk de-fragmention. Why the disk goes into disorder I still don't get ,
