Probelm geting my USB modem to work

Hi
I have a imac DV G3 and have just got a D-link DSL-200 ADSL USB modem. Now desparate after 3 days of trying to go broadband !!!!

Have installed d-link mac driver from their ftp site, but when i plug the usb cable in to the mac it says software not availble and it does not connect.

I notice that in the modem panel that is connecting via internal modem even tho I have selected ADSL USB modem from the drop down list.
Also can I get an ethernet adaptor as only have 2 ysb ports - is it quicker?
PLEASE HELP !!!!

Spinners,

I can't find the DSL-200 mac driver on the UK d-link site. And the DSL-200 is not listed as Mac compatible.

If this is a freebie from your broadband ISP, I suggest you send it back and ask for an ethernet DSL modem, D-Link make them also. Otherwise you'll have to terminate your broadband agreement and switch to someone else.

Or you could buy your own Ethernet DSl modem, with wireless if you want for about £60-£90.

HI, Spinners -

I agree with the others - get an ethernet modem.

If they include the modem as part of their service, most reputable ISP's will provide an ethernet modem. They may resist, because USB modems are cheaper - but that doesn't mean they won't.

With your G3 iMac, the USB speed is USB 1.1 - it will never be more than that. As a result, when using a USB modem you are not getting your money's worth out of broadband, whether it is DSL or cable. I don't have the exact numbers available, but I would expect USB 1.1 to be less than 10% of the connection speed available with ethernet.

You are paying a premium for a fast connection to the internet; there's no reason to throw most of that speed away by having a slow connection between the Mac and the modem.

Spinners,

Pipex comes very highly recommended among Mac users in the UK, so I hope they oblige you and send an ethernet modem.

Thanks for the link to the DSL200 mac drivers, as I said the support website makes no mention of Mac support, indeed it only lists Windows as a requirement.

The download comes with three installers, two for PPPoA, which I think is what you will want, but I'm not sure which of the two you need. They're Carbonised installers (meaning native for both OS9 and OSX) and for OS9 seem to contain a set of extensions (ADSL Library, ADSL PPP Driver, ADSL USB Driver, ADSL Scanner, ADSL DLPI Driver), a modem script (ADSL USB Modem), a control panel (ADSL Setup) and a set of preferences (ADSL Preferences).

Can you confirm that all of these were installed ? I can't help you work out which one of the two as it'll depend on the settings used by Pipex.
