Pioneer DVR-110D DVD burner questions

I currently have a Pioneer DVR-106D DVD burner which is next to useless and I want to replace it with a Pioneer DVR-110D DVD burner.

I read somewhere that because Apple flashes the Pioneer drives with its own firmware, that it might not work correctly in my (Rev.A) G5. Could someone confirm this? If so what functions wont work properly?

Also, I found links on this forum to a firmware flash (DVRFlash 2.2) for the drive, but I'm not sure what exactly it does and how it is supposed to be applied. Could someone please explain this?

Thanks

Thanks for the link Edwin! The site seems to be very informative but it is a little technical for me when they get into firmware and patches etc.

The info on the site seems to tell me that I can use a non-Apple DVR-110D, but that it will not work with dual-layer disks without a patch. I don't usually use Dual-layer disks anyway so I think I should be alright.

I will purchase the drive anyway as it will only cost me about £30 and I'm desperate to be able to read DVD-R's again! I will be able to install the drive OK, as I built PC's for some years, but i don't know how to apply firmware updates (on a mac). The site suggests using a PC i think. Could someone confirm this? I may decide I want DL support down the line!!

Thanks

I replaced the Sony Combo drive in my Dual G5/2.3 with a Pioneer 110D a few weeks ago. I can't comment on burning dual layer discs because I am not purchasing any until the price comes down significantly. Burning 4x DVD-Rs has worked perfectly so far.

My drive had firmware version 1.08 installed at the factory. I have since updated the firmware to the latest version (1.22) using DVRFlash 2.2.

Using DVRFlash to update the firmware is relatively easy using the instructions included:

1) Go to Pioneer's US (or Japanese) site and download the 1.22 firmware file. It has a .exe extension since it is intended for Windows users but you can easily extract the firmware files inside using Stuffit Expander (make sure you use version 10.0.1).

2) Place the two 1.22 firmware files in a folder on your desktop along with DVRFlash.

3) Launch Terminal and enter the command to update the 110D's firmware.

Within minutes, if there are no problems, your drive will have the latest firmware. Once you reboot you can easily verify success by checking the Disc Burning info in System Profiler.

The 110D will work in iDVD but will not burn dual layer discs unless it has Apple firmware. However, a hack is available (search xlr8yourmac.com for more info) that will enable DL burning in iDVD.

Not sure on this. I just bought a 110D this week, installed it, and used Toast 7.0 to burn a 7.91 gig VIDEO_TS folder in DVD-ROM format from a ripped DVD.

I would guess this means it can burn dual-layer out of the box since I never upgraded firmware (it says "version 1.11" in the "About this mac" panel).

The disc i used was a RiData Double-layer +R DL 8.5 gig. Does this mean it burned it as a dual-layer, or are these simply higher capacity discs?

hello,
i have read all the post and i'm starting to understand most of this. i just purchased and installed the pioneer dvr-110d. i tried to to stuff-it the 1.22 update and only got the white page icon. i used stuff it on the .exe file and got a desktop file with three whilte page icons. i could not stuff those for some reason. then my next problem is that i don't know anything about the terminal. so i tried to install the dvrflash 2.2 on my terminal and got the following:

Device parameter was not given, detecting all DVR drives:

Device : A:
Vendor : PIONEER
Model : DVD-RW DVR-110D
Revision : 1.17

Status : RPC-2 (region locked)
Region : 1
Changes : 4 region changes remaining
4 vendor resets remaining
state is 'Region set'

Now run DVRFlash again, from the command prompt, using
one of the device(s) listed above as first parameter

Press the Return key to exit

so i am very lost.. if anyone can help, it would be very appreciated

If you are trying to flash to 1.22 you should have two files that have names like this:
RB100011.122
RB100111.122
(white page docs)

You should also have the DVDFlash exe in the same folder! Don't unstuff this run it as a true executable!

What you need to do is in Terminal change directory (command=cd) to the folder with those two files and the DVD Flash program as well. Once in the directory with all those components you need to use a command like this:

./DVRFlash -vf PIONEER RB100011.122 RB100111.122

Then just walk through the prompts in the DVDFlash program.

Hope this helps!
