Importing from a Panasonic HDC TM700

I just got this Panasonic which is able to shoot video at 1080p 28Mbps. I know that this format is not AVCHD compliant, and currently not recognized by iMovie 09.
Does anyone know of a work around? The first step is getting the files imported into the Mac, and then the next would be to see if one of the converters could convert it to AIC, which I was hoping would work as they are .mts files.

Good morning all,

I have a Panasonic TM900 and following your guide I was able to import the avchd files into iMovie 11 (not recognized before), but i have a problem. The video imported has lower quality than the original one; I do think that iMovie does some conversion.

I read somewhere that iMovie convert to AIC format, is it true ? 😕

How can I avoid this ?

I would like to work with HD files to obtain the best quality possible.

Can someone help me ?

The only way to avoid the conversion is to use something other than iMovie. AIC is the native language that iMovie speaks for editing. Have you tried exporting any video? It's possible that the quality you're presented with in the editor is not full quality but "good enough" for editing purposes. I've always been quite pleased with the QuickTime exports of my video.

These is how I import to iMovie:

1) Copy the files from the camcorder to the hard-disk

2) "Convert" them with rewrap2mv4

3) Import files onto iMovie

4) ....

5) Export

The problem is after point 3; the quality is sensible low from the original.

Is it true that is possible to modify iMovie to accept video in 1080p50 natively (using plist or something like this) and how ?

After stage 2, you will have a folder of m4v files.

Have you tried MPEG Streamclip to convert these files?? I think if you have a fast Mac, you can import these m4v files straight into iMovie and if you don't ask for 'Optimization', I thought that it doesn't convert, but does require a lot of processing power to edit.

MPEG Streamclip can take the M4V files and convert them into pretty much anything. I use it to take my 1080p50 files and turn them into 720p25 or 720p50 AIC files. Whilst I accept that there is a tiny loss of quality, it is almost imperceptible and can be used by iMovie as high quality movie. iMovie 11 will also import them at the full 50 fps frme rate
