Importing from a Panasonic HDC TM700

I just got this Panasonic which is able to shoot video at 1080p 28Mbps. I know that this format is not AVCHD compliant, and currently not recognized by iMovie 09.
Does anyone know of a work around? The first step is getting the files imported into the Mac, and then the next would be to see if one of the converters could convert it to AIC, which I was hoping would work as they are .mts files.

Alan, thanks for the Automator app. I don't know if anybody else has experienced this, but the script seems to hang occasionally on longer clips (over 2 GB?). I have successfully gotten it to wrap an entire 4GB clip with repeated attempts of quitting the Rewrap2M4V.app and rerunning it. Has anybody else seen a similar problem and is there a fix for this? I haven't yet tried the command from the command line to see if it also hangs there.

Thanks again Alan, you've helped to make my new TM700 a useful tool in 1080 60P.

I haven't tried long clips, but I doubt Allans script has anything to do with file size.

Two points, his script must be in the Applications folder to work and you can't drop a folder on it. But, that would be an ez fix. Allan is this something you'll do, or should I try?

I'm surprised I'm will treat it as 60p. Normally I change the plist value. I wonder what will happen if you do moving fx. With 60p. It might only process every other frame.

Note, you do not want to use jes to deinterlaced! It is progressive video!

Remember you'll need to export every other frame (60i) to go to other devices. And, I find it only plays at about 25fps on my mbp. I'm going to take a sample and try on a new mbp. I'll bet it takes an I7 iMac to play a clip at 60fps.

I've noticed it hanging when dragging multiple clips. Both instances are probably due to the text output from ffmpeg exceeding a certain limit. I think I've fixed it; please grab the workflow again and try it.

As for the location of the Automator workflow, it should be able to be run from anywhere as long as ClipGrab is in the Applications folder.

I have started working on a self-contained Cocoa app. I hope to have it done within a week.

Hi .... it has been several days since you last posted (ddt460) so how are things working out for you with iMovie and the new Panasonic HDC TM700? I am thinking about getting one of these camcorders also .... but I really want to use iMovie as well .....

if you have a moment to update here, it would be great ...

+Thank you ...+

If you get the TM700 and shoot in 1080i, you can use iMovie in the usual way. If you want to shoot at 1080p then you have to do some converting. It is a great camera and worth getting even if you only use the 1080i. You do have to consider what kind of output you wish to get. If you plan to make DVD's, remember that those are not HD.
I finally got to try Alan's automator workflow, but don't get any audio either.

I also tried Alan's automator workflow on a Panasonic GF1 AVCHD file and got no audio, plus some other problems mentioned above. However, I tried David S. suggestion (above) and tried ClipWrap2. I downloaded the trial version and it seemed to work perfectly. It unwraps the mts file and rewraps into a QT format without transcoding (it also has options for transcoding). It is VERY fast and there is no generational loss. It can be found here:

http://www.clipwrap.com/

Try the trial version and see if it works for you.

I did download Clipwrap and am still deciding whether or not to pay the $50 for the real thing. While it is faster than Handbrake, I still thought it took a long time. I didn't see the options for transcoding. Maybe that is only in the paid version. And the other questions I have is whether or not Handbrake does mandatory transcoding.

Alan,

Importing into iMovie, there is no audio in the event viewer, nor is there audio in QT or iTunes. I am on a late '09 MBP Core 2 Duo with 10.6.3. What can you tell us about your setup that might help narrow this down? Either your Mac HW/SW or any custom settings on your TM700 could be relevant.
From what I can derive looking at the output of ffmpeg, the audio stream is recognized and copied and should be in there so I'm stumped at the moment.

Here is another question ..... have you noticed any problems with play-back within iMovie if you were shooting video and also using IMAGE STABILIZATION in the TM700 ? How about if you did happen to make a DVD with iMovie ... and Image Stabilization was utilized in the camcorder .... did you see any artifacts from the DVD copy of the footage?

seems to me something is mentioned about this somewhere ...

thanks ... !
