Internal speaker will not turn off when headphones plug in - HELP

HELP - the internal speaker works all the time, even when headphones are plugged in. Everyone can hear what is being played through the headphones. Very annoying, at the gym people keep telling me to turn it down. The manual says the internal speaker should disable itself when headphones or earphones are connected. Can anyone tell me how to disable this function.

Gateway, Windows Vista

This problem is on this board almost constantly and 99 percent of the time the user thinks the headphone is fully engaged into ipod and it isnt.
Make sure the white part of headphone plug or whatever type youre using is fully plugged against the ipod, it takes a hard push.

I had this problem initially too so Im not judging you at all.

If this doesnt work then you need to contact apple by store or phone.
