Files within folders scatter once folder is closed

I know this is probably due to some corrupt file I can just drag and drop into the trash, but maybe I'm wrong.

On both my MacBook Pro and my Time Capsule, files (pictures, documents, videos, etc.) go from being nicely arranged by name or kind to being completely scattered or piled on top of each other inside the folder when I open it up. The only thing that seems to be working right now is arranging my desktop icons, which are actually staying in place as of now.

Basically, I have to sort the files that are within a folder on both my computer and Time Capsule the moment I go in otherwise I can't find what it is I'm looking for. Does that make sense?

Is there a cure for this?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Oh, I see now—it's happening to every single folder.

Try this then:

1. Open any folder.
2. Set the view to your liking.
3. Press Command-J
4. Click "Use as Defaults."

Does this make any difference?

Your Time Capsule mirrors the contents of your hard disk, so of course the folders on it behave the same way as they do on your primary disk.

Did you upgrade to 10.5 from 10.4 or did you do a clean install of 10.5?

Cheers.

Then it seems like it's a problem of ownership of some .DS_Store files. Let's try to narrow the problem down a bit.

1. Is your main account an administrator account?
2. Is your main account the first created account?
3. Did you upgrade from 10.4 or was it a clean install of 10.5?
4. Are there other accounts on this machine? If yes, are you experiencing the same problem with the view settings not sticking under other accounts?

What you can try as a possible remedy is this:

1. Switch to the Finder, close any Finder windows if they are open, and press Command-F.
2. Search for all items with the name .DS_Store. To do this:
• Click the Kind pop-up menu and choose "Other"
• In the resulting dialog use the "visibility" search attribute to quickly locate the "File invisible" attribute (it will suffice to only type "vis").
• Click the In Menu checkbox next to the "File invisible" attribute and click OK.
• Click the Kind pop-up menu and choose "File visibility."
• Click the Visible Items pop-up menu and choose Invisible Items.
• Type .DS_Store in the "Search for" field.
• Make sure the Search parameters are set to your local hard disk (This Mac) and File Name.
3. Let the search finish completely.
4. Select all found items and move them to the Trash.
5. Log out and log back in.
6. See if you can make the view settings stick.

Cheers

It happened again last night, whatever it is it's driving me nuts. Every folder I click in to now is just a scattered, stacked, mismatched bunch of files.

To answer your questions:

1. I am the admin on the computer.
2. My main account is the first created. My friend owned this Mac before me but I had it wiped clean at the Apple Store so I could start it up new again.
3. I believe I upgraded from 10.4 through the automatic update feature, I'm now using 10.5.8.
4. There are no other accounts on the machine.

When I press Command-F and search for .DS_Store there are no results in the search.
