Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access...

"The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items."

This is the error message I receive when attempting to copy certain files to a storage server. I've used this server since Tiger w/out these errors. The only thing that has changed is my updating to Snow Leopard.

The file info states my permission is read & write.

I have repaired permissions but that did not help.

This happens when trying to drag & drop, and when trying to copy & paste.

I've been assured that the server if functioning properly.

I was able to copy every file that I wanted, except the images, in particular .tiff files and .icns files (although it happens with every image, jpg, png, eps), some I just created myself like the icon, but no matter how many edits, or name changes I make, I cannot copy them to my server. So far the only image I could copy was a screen grab I saved as a .tiff, But if I create the .tiff in photoshop, it won't copy to the server.

Is this a snow leopard security feature? If so, is there anyway to bypass this feature so I can copy & share files that I create?

If it's a bug, does anyone know of a fix or a work around (perhaps some way to strip the file of the offending apple info that's stating it's not my file?)

From the sound of it, and looking on Google there are a lot of people suffering with the "The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission..." problem when copying.

Mine was when copying files To, or Across folders on a FreeBSD/Samba server using Finder.

After being asked to check permissions/verify disk using Disk utilities the problem still persisted.

Spoke to techie and after about 5 minutes he came up with the the following link that:

http://splatdot.com/fixing-snow-leopard-10-6-3-samba-write-access/

Basically as I was using Samba, add "unix extensions = no" in the [general] section of your smb.conf

Restarted samba and rebooted my mac. Remounted the shares and SUCCESS!

I am also getting the "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items." Having 10.6.3

I have to dump to a storage server. These issues didn't happen before the upgrade to Snow Leopard.

I can't copy files like .AIFF, .AI (Illustrator), .PSD, .jpg, pretty much anything except folder names themselves.

Anyone with any news if Apple is working on this bug?

I tried to submit a bug report but that is down too.

I then drag the "from" directory into finder and add a SPACE and then do the same for the "to" directory. This just saves you having to type out the locations.

This worked well for me. I didn't realize you could drag and drop the to and from, from finder into the console. Thanx.

What about a command that updates a directory?

Same problem here. I had no issues on my PowerBookk with Leopard copying files every week between my computer and a USB key. After unpacking my brand new iMac (with a big smile) this issue has been recurring.
No problem to copy files via Finder to my TC (Ethernet cable) but impossible to copy with Finder to USB stick trying various options :
- formated the USB stick with Disk Utility
- from iMac (snow Leopard) to USB stick (connected to keyboard)
- from TC to USB stick(connected to TC).
- Tried also to zip file (create archive) but Finder will stop with the another message "you do not have permission access to ..."
- from TC to USB stick (connected to TC) using my PowerBook (Leopard)

Only thing that worked is to copy my folder from my iMac to TC, then TC to Powerbook (wifi) and then Powerbook to USB stick. Whole process takes 20 mins (600MB of data). A bit insane ... but hope that can be helpful to others waiting for the fix.

Apple please find a fix for this bug ....

I was running into this problem as well when I would attempt to copy files created by PhotoShop CS4 to my samba server.

I unmounted the share, added the line: unix extensions = no to my smb.conf file, then restarted the samba service and re-mounted the share. All is good for me once again.

Hope this helps someone.

I have found the answer, at least for my problem anyway. I believe it should work for you all as well.
I found it here: http://splatdot.com/fixing-snow-leopard-10-6-3-samba-write-access

add the following line to the bottom of the "global settings" section in the smb.conf file (found at /etc/samba/smb.conf)

unix extensions = no

then restart Samba

/etc/init.d/samba restart

Mac machines will have to be logged off and back on again to be able to see the share again unless you want to wait an hour or so, Windows machines will notice the restart straight away and should be able to reconnect immediately.

I have the same problem and the 'unix extensions = no' worked with Debian.
But this is not an acceptable fix.
It does not work with my NAS because I have no way to change the Samba settings.

This problem smacks of the old Microsoft way. Try to change something and then blame the rest of the world when your OS does not work.

Anyone know how to down grade my OS from 10.6.3? Oh wait, you can't. Come on Apple we are a decade in to the 21st century why are you still in the 20th?

Totally agree....

I have not used Apples network "afp server protocol" in years because it is just not practical on a small mixed system network server. Up until this last update it was not a problem as the "smb protocol" worked flawlessly. I would laugh at all the MS users struggling to connect to a servers, the Mac just worked no BS... now I am in the same boat.

What gives?
Why would Apple change this main stream system function? Most of us play in a mixed system universe an are connecting to server where AFP is not running.

PLEASE FIX THIS NOW!!!!
