"The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items."

This is the error message I receive when attempting to copy certain files to a storage server. I've used this server since Tiger w/out these errors. The only thing that has changed is my updating to Snow Leopard.

The file info states my permission is read & write.

I have repaired permissions but that did not help.

This happens when trying to drag & drop, and when trying to copy & paste.

I've been assured that the server if functioning properly.

I was able to copy every file that I wanted, except the images, in particular .tiff files and .icns files (although it happens with every image, jpg, png, eps), some I just created myself like the icon, but no matter how many edits, or name changes I make, I cannot copy them to my server. So far the only image I could copy was a screen grab I saved as a .tiff, But if I create the .tiff in photoshop, it won't copy to the server.

Is this a snow leopard security feature? If so, is there anyway to bypass this feature so I can copy & share files that I create?

If it's a bug, does anyone know of a fix or a work around (perhaps some way to strip the file of the offending apple info that's stating it's not my file?)

I seem to recall an issue where photoshop was not happy trying to open/save from/to server shares.
Workaround was save the file to a local drive, then copy to the server.

What type of server (windows or mac?)
How large are the files? there is usually a per file OS limitation of file sizes, and depending on the server, there may be either a disk quota or per file per user limit set there, too (similar to an email attachment file size limit).

depending on the server type, it may be a 'resultant set of policies' problem, where if you have RW access to a shared folder, but insufficient access to a higher level folder; since most restrictive right wins, if you cant write to
c:\folderA, then even if you have RW to c:\folderA\FolderB, the restriction on folderA prevents writing to folderB

or, you have RW to physical folderB, but not RW to the logical Sharename folderB

--I am trying to copy from a local drive to the server. I never work or save directly to the server.

--Server is Linux.

File size is not an issue, the video i moved was much larger and was copied without a problem. This is ONLY happening with certain files, pictures & art mostly, so far, I can copy most other types of files without an issue.

(I just found a .txt file created w/apple text that does the same thing, but a .pdf created on the same day copied fine. So this is affecting more than just pictures.)

This is most likely a Snow Leopard *extended attributes* problem. I found a work-around at another support forum... http://support.expandrive.com/discussions/expandrive-mac/388-problems-with-files -that-have-extended-attributes

*"I discovered that if I use a terminal command:*
*cp -X +source destination+*
*Then the -X causes extended attributes to be skipped. This allows the copy to proceed."*

While this gets my files copied to the server, it is going to take hours if not days to get my work on the server now as I have to do this for each file one at a time, Ugggh!

Chalk me up as another user with this problem. I upgraded to 10.6.3 and now I can't write files to several servers. I get the same error messages. Whatever Apple did, I hope they undo soon! Right now, our workaround is for me to upload files to a different server, and have someone else move them to the right place! Not very efficient, or elegant. (It is broken even when I try it through Parallels, although that isn't surprising, since the issue seems to lie with the underlying OS).

I have been able to move files to the server if I zip them first. But this makes viewing any images on the server impossible and people need to download and unzip from their machines to even preview the images.

I have just installed and updated to 10.6.3 and that does seem to be when it all started.

Ditto.

My server is Ubuntu with the latest Samba and after the 10.6.3 updater I am unable to copy files from my Mac to the Linux server.

After checking around, there appeared to be a thread about files with extended attributes. Using xattr from the terminal, the files I was attempting to copy had the 'com.apple.metadata:kMDItemFinderComment' attribute.

Removing this with a xattr -d 'com.apple.metadata:kMDItemFinderComment' *.mov allowed me to copy the file with no problems.

Add a new finder comment, and I am no longer able to copy.

Come on Apple, get it right!!!

This problem seems to have been lingering for quite a while and has gotten progressively worse with each update as far as i can tell. It has everything to do with Finder. Terminal (and the core commands seem to work fine). Here are all the problems and solutions i've found to date...

- You can create a directory at the root of a share but can only create an "untitled folder" at deeper levels with the message...

You don’t have permission to rename the item “untitled folder”.

... if you switch the view mode to anything other than column view you should now be able to create and rename folders and any level. Strange but true.

- As for permission issues, the Terminal solution works best for me. Basically the same as mentioned above however i work a little differently. Basically i open a Terminal session type in...

cp -RX

... R for recursive and X to ignore other attributes. Then do what i would normally do (open two finder windows to the respective locations i want to copy from and to).

I then drag the "from" directory into finder and add a SPACE and then do the same for the "to" directory. This just saves you having to type out the locations.

If any of you guys are talking in other threads about this issue please link to this thread and any other related ones so the issue gets more exposure.

Seriously, this is the one part of the operating system that should always works flawlessly.

Also, Apple, if you are watching... please add a copy queue to finder instead of it trying to copy everything at once. Call me if you want to talk about it.

Cheers!

Thanks for your help, afinno.

Unfortunately, I still can't manage to copy a file from the shared folder on our OS X Server (10.4.11) back to my mobile account's desktop. I get the "Operation can't be completed" error. And when I try to use the +cp -X <source> <destination>+ command, I get this ever so helpful message: "Input/output error". I've made sure that ownership, etc. are all good, and cleaered ACLs.

Think I'm going to have to switch back to 10.5 for a while.

This problem has wiped out a full afternoon's work for me. Grr.

Anyone have any luck?
