M-Audio KeyStudio 49......Volume Problems???

I recently purchased the M-Audio KeyStudio 49 from apple and when using it in garageband the volume level is very very low. Im using a 2009 macbook pro 13 inch and garageband '09. I have the volume slider, the track volume, and the master volume all the way up and when punching the keys hardly is the only time i get somewhat of a decent volume, but the notes do not sound very clear at all. Does anybody know how to fix this? I hope i didnt waste $100 lol.....any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
