    i,

I had been using my Macbook with a Samsung SyncMaster 2243LNX display in clamshell mode and the Samsung monitor set to 1680 x 1050 without any problems.

This morning I updated the Mac OS x with the latest update 10.6.3. After finishing installing the update, my external display quit working. I turn on the computer, let it boot, close the lid and let it go into clamshell mode. Then, the display tries to "come alive" and flickers for about half a second before going dark. It does this every 10 or so seconds. The syncmaster resolution is set to 1680 x 1050. If I lower the resolution to 1280 x 800 it works but the external monitor does not display it optimally.

It seems the computer is trying to "send the signal" to the monitor but the monitor will not "activate", it flickers and goes black.

    Thanks.

Adding my name to the list.

10.6.3 completely broke my external display support, again, (LG). Huge step backward indeed after all the trouble it had been to have it working on miniDP. The previous issue I had had been resolved (around 10.5.7) by an update to the miniDP adapter's microcode.

I've tried all of the following to no avail: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10472124-263.html?part=rss&tag=feed&subj=Ma cFixIt .

I took all of those steps today and will next restore 10.6.2. I pray that I really did exactly as you suggested. So, if any of the rest did R C-R's suggestions and one of those worked let us know.

In review, I reset the PRAM without effect. I downloaded OnyX and even ran Cocktail, which I already own without a change. I then removed the Display overrides and restarted without effect. After removing windowserver preferences nothing changed. Last, I installed the Combo updated without a change.

I appreciate being able to try something else but to no avail.

I have 2 MacBook Pros, one bought 3 years ago and another last december, both with 10.6.3. The old one is not experiencing problems with my external SyncMaster SAMSUNG, but the new one does. I tried many things but nothing. Image goes on and off for seconds. Do you know when to expect this fix from Apple?

I dont think we can expect any fix date from Apple...

10.6.3 seems to have problems with graphics. I've filed a bug report with Apple and designated it as "serious". They requested more information about my external monitor so, presumably, they're looking into it.

It would be great if everyone filed a report on this. Just go to http://bugreport.apple.com. You need an Apple ID to log in.

Just for the record, I am having the same problem, with a SyncMaster 2253BW Samsung external monitor since my update to 10.6.3. Cant use my full resolution and therefore cant use widescreen. Pretty lame, hoping for a fix soon.

I'm having exactly the same problem after upgrading to 10.6.3 was working fine in 10.6.2

I have the same problem with both PPT and Keynote. The only thing that works for me is to present PPT in "View Presenter Tools." Nothing else works to present and not have the screen scrambled.

    Fix for me :

MacBook 13" unibody, LG W2042S-F display, mini-dport to VGA worked fine for 6 months with this external monitor at full res 1680x1050, yesterday on / off all the time, mostly off.

Tried all the suggestions in apple support / google (6 hours of tinkering, even performed erase & install), nothing worked for me, the fix was, have external monitor connected & flickering, leave the mini-dport adaptor plugged in the macbook then disconnect the vga connector from the mini-dport, wait 30 secs, reconnect the vga connector back on the mini-dport (which never was removed from the macbook), and flickering stopped. Removing the mini-dport doesn't help, it must be left connected, it's the vga you remove from the mini-dport.

is this a permanent fix? no idea, but monitor has now been flicker free for a few hours at max resolution.

    Pete.

At least you got a temporary fix. I tried your potential fix process but it didn't work for me. Samsung SyncMaster 2232BW.

I'm back in the same boat - just stopped working, must've been a lucky few days.

Can't pinpoint anything that caused it to revert, flicked the lid up the last time and it's gone back to flickering, above point doesn't work for me either now.
