i am trying to restore a 2g iphone but don't have a sim card in it, can it be done? i can on getting error messages or it just stops loading the restore

No. You cannot restore or update software without a sim card. The sim card need not be activated, but it must be present & if not activated, must be from the last carrier that the iphone was activated with.
so i have an old sim card that i have when i used to be with cingular, would that work?
Perhaps, try and see...like I said, you cannot restore or update software without a sim card present in the iphone. Since it appears that this iphone was last activated on the AT&T network, your Cingular sim "may" work...no guarantees that it will. If it doesn't, you'll have to get one from an AT&T store, again, it need not be activated...just has to be valid.
can an iphone be restored without a sim card?
