Is Windows Media Player Safe?

Some sites require me to have the Windows Media Player plugin installed in Safari, and other Browsers, to view some content. I don't ever use IE so I don't know if this is also the case there.

My concern is that the Windows Media Player installer wil install some thing that I don't want on my Mac (like Spyware or a Back Door).

So is it safe to install Windows Media Player?
