Giant exclamation point

Today while trying to create an album I discovered that I can't open ANY of my pictures. When I open iPhoto I am able to see all the thumbnail versions, however, when i click on them to edit or see the larger image all I get is a giant exclamation mark.

I tried clicking "show file" but it takes me to the finder homepage and not the real image. I have not moved the location of the original image which is in a folder within "My Pictures" in the finder.

The library was working just fine this morning when I added more pictures. The only thing I have done to possibly upset the library is splitting and merging of events and also, I deleted Picasa (by google) in the afternoon and created 2 aliases to the originals and the modified ones. I deleted some Picasa folders, so I don't see how that would affect the iPhoto library.

When I click on the aliases and go into the folders, many of my events are missing. The events that are present in the aliases I am able to view files with preview like I normally do, but when I try to open those in iPhoto then the same exclamation point appears.

Has this happened to anyone? I was able to fix one of my albums, however, it would be incredibly time consuming to do all the other pictures as well. Not to mention that I stopped saving pictures in 2 folders a while ago and iphoto is the only copy I have got.

Can someone help me with this?

the "!" indicates that iPhoto has lost the link between the thumbnail and the High Res photo - this can be caused by user activity within the iphoto library

This could be the cause depending on exactly what you did and how you did it

Have you tried rebuilding the library -- depress the option and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild form the last automatic database backup

What are you doing with the "Aliases" you created?

As I said this could be the cause.

there is really no reason to have aliases of your modified and original folders and having them is an invitation to trouble

It is best to never muck around with the contents of the iPhoto library
