Has anyone (developers in this thread) tried the new OS X Yosemite with the kext-files ?

sorry for the late answer but only checked your comment today. Sure you are right in some points, but if you read my post you can see that:

• I use the term "late 2009" on my post since my mac is from 2009, I know that problem is present on some other versions but I only experienced it on that version.
• Some commands with wildcards can be dangerous, sure, if you change something on the commands, I don't expect that you replace the chown or chmod command with an "rm", for non experienced command line users I had suggested the "kext helper" utility.
• I started the post by referencing that thread, in fact my suggestions are based on info present here, nothing more.
• I also used the expression "possible solutions", in fact after the kext fix's I experienced again the issue and know I'm running a clean mavericks install for a while without the kext fix and without signs of the freeze!

Successful application of Krysztof Turek kext fix

Assuming previous application of fix (see earlier posts), procedure was backup and removal of AMDFramebuffer.kext, AMDSupport.kext, and AMD2600Controller.kext from /System/Library/Extensions followed by a reboot and confirmation of loaded status of version 1.6.6 of applicable kext fix files.

Paulo - no real issue with the post, just trying to keep the thread tight and accurate for anyone encountering this problem for the first time, i.e. finally decided to try and update the old OS.

Hi All

I have just applied 10.9.4 and noticed that the ATI Kexts remained at 1.6.6 after the update. So only needed to archive the AMD kexts.

I notice the discussion has been branched but when I try to get to the new branch I get an error saying I don't have the access rights.

Is the branch a private discussion?

Dear freandc - thanks for the info that you were able to install OS X 10.9.4, with no issues. Can you confirm still no freezes since your installation? I'm just a little surprised that no one else has posted on this topic, since usually a new OS update creates several emails from the veterans on this site who are updating and describing how the update and kext fix worked out. It's been awfully quiet ....

Confirmed -- no freezes since installation. It's my opinion that we will never see freezes once the fix is applied as the old kexts clearly address the root cause. What I think is more the issue now is whether the installation and loading of the kexts will continue to succeed as the OS evolves. Hence, the focus of my post was the installation rather than the lack of freezing but your point is well taken. In the future I will make sure I also report freeze status.

With respect to the 'veterans', we're probably dying off as we get the urge for something new. I'd be surprised if I last another year. I'm maxed @ 4GB memory with a 2.8 GHz Duo cpu and now you can get a 3.4 GHz quad core with up to 32 GB. One of these days there's going to be an extra dollar in my wallet and I'm gonna spend it.

Thanks again, freandc. I am waiting for Retina-display iMacs before I upgrade, and maybe also affordable flash memory options. Also, it looks like Yosemite technically will run on our machines, although the situation again will be if Apple leaves the graphics drivers unlocked so that we can switch out the bad ones for the good ones. (We are fortunate that the Mavericks drivers remain unlocked.)

I think that I'd like to see if this machine runs on Yosemite, and at a decent speed, then figure out how long I wait for that Retina-display iMac to come out ....

Another update, and another crash later I reapplied the Kext fix. Mac OS 10.9.4 seems to be running well again, though I hate the hassle of needing to fix this after every single update.

Thank you to this post and the original fix posted by krzysztof-turek. Fingers crossed but so far twenty-four hours without incident and potentially more time to save for a new comp.

Typical screen freeze consisted of repeated Kernal listing in Console with random numbers after it. This would continue indefinitely until hard reboot. I was wondering if anyone has tried the iMacGraphicsFWUpdate.dmg from Apple posted in 2012 (iMac Graphic FW Update 3.0)? Just wondering why Apple would not have included this in routine software updates.

Well I've held off doing any updates since my last post, and my system has been running well. Messed up last night and instead of muting the continual request from Software update to update to 10.9.4 I hit the wrong option and when I turned my machine on this morning it had updated to 10.9.4 😟

I've been running for a couple of hours though without any issues, but I'm ready on the first freeze to remove the AMDxxxx files. I guess I won't have to wait much longer LOL

@Biotech Guy.. I'm pretty sure I jumped for joy when I saw that update FW appear but wondered why my system hadn't applied it during one of the updates. I did manually download it and try to apply it but it just told me I didn't have the correct hardware or something and wouldn't install. I think it was meant for a later iMac than my 2007 model.

Hi, I own a iMac (mid 2007, 7,1) 4 GB 667 MHz, ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT 128 MB.

Recently upgraded Mountain Lion to Mavericks 9.4.5, it froze within a minute of installation as usual. So I performed the kext procedure as I have ever since snow leopard. but it still froze all the time.

I went into the /System/Library/Extensions folder and noticed that apple have renamed the kext files starting with ATI to AMD.

renamed my stable kexts (version 1.6.6.25 (7429))

From

ATI2400Controller.kext

ATIFramebuffer.kext

ATISupport.kext

To

AMD2400Controller.kext

AMDFramebuffer.kext

AMDSupport.kext

I then reinstalled them using in Kext Helper b7 tool.

My system is now running rock solid without any freezes, I instantly noticed the speed difference once it had loaded up.
