24" iMac Screen Freezes since 10.6.3 update - pls help!

Thanks for your great info. Can you tell me what I am missing ? I am now on ML. PreviousIy Lion, fixed with kext helper with know good kext. (thanks to this great thread) . Now on ML I cannot seem to get kext helper to complete. It states " all looks good, cross your fingers and reboot" . I cannot reboot without force quiting kext helper. I reboot and freezing continues. I have rebuilt the cash using your great directions. Here is what I receive.

I have followed your suggestions to verify kext info. I have not been able to get the info your posts have show, with the known good kext. It continues to only display the X2000 (8.0.0) and I think you stated this is from ML. I do not see the others like your post shows. I am not familiar with how to add the kext via terminal, a little outside my knowledge base, but always willing to learn.

What am I missing oh wise one?

It seems like your system is not using the 10.6.2 Kext. The hang of the Kext helper is normal the forced restart also. Does Kext help display the succefull install of the 10.6.2 Kext?

I have run kext helper several times. Each time I get the message that " all looks good, cross your fingers and reboot ". I have immediately reboot by force quit, I have waited 30 min and then force quit and reboot. Freezing remains. I have looked at the files in the kext folder and all the kext files seem to be there. Would it valuable if I post a shot of the files ? I gained these files from the forum. Also these are the same one I used to repair Lion and SL before that. So the files have worked on the two previous OS.

Is there something in the process I am missing. In Lion kext helper seemed to work smoothly and not require force quit if memory serves. I am not familiar with how to install the kext files via terminal, I understand that is the only other way.

Any advice or suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

I had to force quit the kext helper before reboot too, nevertheless the files seem to be in place:

and so far - like it said - finger crossed, but the GPU crash did not occured ( 24" iMac 8,1, ML ) during normal day to day usage during which it previously crashed

10.8.2 supplemental update 1.0 is out.

it does *not* contain any ATI/NVIDIA related fixes/kexts.

(IOPCI, IOHIDFamily, webcontentfilter has been updated, list at the end).

once you got 10.8.2 with the old kexts running, it is safe to upgrade to 10.8.2 supplemental update, it won't cause any harm.

Don't know if we have the same iMac, Mine

iMac 8.1, 24", 2.8 c2d, ATI Radeon HD 2600 pro 256mb

I did a clean install of ML from usb stick

applied the Kext and did a forced reboot.

* Did you close all running apps?

* run disk util to repair permissions?

* Only apply the 3 relevant kext?

Thank for your help and all others. This thread has been my Mac saver. I have the 2400 ATI card. Yes after many tries with kext helper, I went back to the old old instructions from our super star KrzysiuTurek . I had been making a silly mistake. I was not applying the just the relavent Kext. Once I applied just the relavent kext, kext helper worked !

But alas, I was trying so many things , I copied the old X2000 kext ! I feel silly.

SWMASTER states this will cause kernel panic. Is there a way I can get the X2000 8.0.0 and replace with kext helper. Can I copy it from somewere ?

I am so close to having a stable iMac again.

Did you allready install the 10.8.2 update? As far as i know it overwrites the installed Kext.

You cannot unistall a OSX update/upgrade.

Since you have changed a lot on you system I would recommend a clean ML install and apply the 3 Kext.

(Make a TimeMachine backup)

I have an iMac 7.1; 20" ATI2400.

Reading this thread have not deared to upgrade from 10.6.4 for a long while. Until last week I've changed my mind.

Did a clean install as KrzysiuTurek did. My mac froze several time. Mouse was moving screen was frozen; colored ball was spinning; woke up from sleep but spinning ball did not stopped rolling.

Yesterday I used KrzysiuTurek Kext. Copied those 3 files and restarted.

Since than no freeze, no ball, iMac works after sleep mode.

Enjoying ML 10.8.2 a lot.

Only one thing: I had to force quit from Kext Helper before restarted my mac.

Righto, another update from me.

On upgrading to 10.8.1 I tried the clean install trick that Krzysiu Turek suggested, with Time Machine back up. I had one freeze after some hours, but didn't bother to do the kext fix straight away. Had no more freezes. One freeze, and then none.

I then upgraded to 10.8.2 and freezes started again, albeit only once every 12 to 24 hours. Eventually got around to doing the clean install again. Had one freeze but again left alone. Currently been running for 4 days…

Obviously, reporting any success on this thread seems to herald the kiss of death (or at least a frozen kiss) but 4 days is not bad going.

GPU crashes were reported in each freeze case.

(& also can't bring myself to use an emoticon on this thread)

(& Apple Hardware Test shows an overspeed for the Hard Disk Drive fan if I do a hot reboot. But not if left off overnight.)

Well, after about 1 week on upgrade to 10.8.2 freezes started again. Peformed kext fix and have been running for 30 days with no issue.

They still haven't fixed it. Shameful apple.

shortly after 10.8.2 supplemental update I got one freeze, applied kexts again, but now out of the blue (the machine was under no load, uptime more than 8 days or so) GPU crash again..

so it's completely f%$!@#ed and I'm really disappointed ;/

Hello everyone. I've tried out several approaches, ending up with one final (solving) solution for my case. Lately, Flash has experienced different issues on macs and since the release of the latest updates for Snow Leopard I've always had freezes here and there running Safari with Flash installed.

I have an iMac 24" running Mac OS X 10.7.5, upgraded with extra ram and ssd, that didn't solve my freezes. Other users in this post have reported replacements of other components, such as Graphichs (NVIDIA and ATI) that didn't work either. Apparently, a replacement of the Logic Board seems to fix the issue, but some of us here may not find that necessary.

I've now removed the Flash plugin with the official uninstaller from Adobe http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-mac-os.html#main_o s substituing it with the Youtube5 extension for Safari, developed by Vertical Forest (http://www.verticalforest.com/youtube5/YouTube5.safariextz).

I've tried the kext solution, but that didn't fix my problem on my NVIDIA graphic. Instead, it genereated issues, such that I decided to restore my previous kext files and remove the flash plugin from my machine.

Since that decision, my iMac is operating just well.

Worked for me, thank god! I have a 20" mid-2007 Mac with the ATI 2400 card. Had been experiencing random seizing since upgrading to Lion, and it seemed to get worse after Mtn Lion. I did the driver downgrade about ten days ago and have not experienced a freeze since. Prior to that my machine would potentially seize a couple of times a day.

Also decided to install smcFanControl, as my CPU & GPU were consistently running in the mid-60C range. By bumping up the CPU to about 2300rpm minimum & the HDD to 1800rpm minimum, everything now runs in the mid-40C range.

All hail KrzysiuTurek for this fix!!! BUT WHY HASN'T APPLE DONE SOMETHING YET?? Inexcusable, considering how many people this appears to affect.
