Q: 24" iMac Screen Freezes since 10.6.3 update - pls help!

I don't know if this is just coincidence or not, but since updating my iMac to 10.6.3 it keeps on crashing. On 3 separate occasions today, whilst using my Mac the screen has gone completely black with thin white lines down it.....see pic below:

http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/6SYzhCgVYEU5TBKqRfOQ1Q?feat=directlink

The fans and hard disk are still running but it will not respond to any keyboard or mouse presses - I simply have to turn it off by holding the power button in.
It will then restart as usual.

Anyone got any ideas? Do you think that if I was to re-install Mac OS X from my original install disk it could solve the issue?

Thanks

Darren

My wife's iMac is a iMac10,1 with an ATI Radeon HD 4670. I assume that I should try the ATI4600Controller.kext

Has anyone successfully tried this on this mac? I would love to know before I attempt it.

I have exacly the same problem. I never had a problem with my iMac before, until a couple of months ago. My computer completely freezes and the only thing I can do is move around the cursor. The only thing left to do is restarting the computer with the button on the back. Not only does the screen freeze, but sometimes it starts to flicker as well.
I have no idea what the cause can be, allthough I have the feeling it happens when a video or photo based app is running, like Aperture or iMovie. So maybe it's possible that there's an issue with the graphics. Let's hope there's a solution soon!

10 days for me! It definitely works on my iMac8,1 with a ATI 2600 Pro. I just want Apple to fix it...the graphics .kext files are the problem.

Good news! Looks like Apple is working on an official fix for 10.6.7

I certainly hope this is the case.
Don't get your hopes up too high, though - technically, the last three "point" updates have addressed "graphics issues / drivers"

*REMEMBER to REPORT the freezing-problem to Apple even though some of you have "fixed" it by replacing old graphics drivers with new ones! I think it is a very risky solution to the problem...*

*The upcoming OS X 10.6.7 has been sent to developers so this is our chance to put pressure on Apple!*

    *Please report here:*

I managed to revive the iMac using the MacBook:

    1) Put the MacBook in Target Disk Mode and hooked it up to the iMac via Firewire
    2) Held down Option on the iMac while booting: it booted from the MacBook's OS X
    3) Disk Utility recognised the iMac's HDD and fixed the GPT (partition table)
    4) The fixed HDD let me boot from the OS X DVD
    5) Installed OS X and restored data from TM

    Morals of the story:

    1) Use kexthelper as advised; simply copying over does not work
    2) Do not hard reset your Mac too often and too brutally
*3) Invest in an external HDD: Time Machine is the next best thing since sliced bread*
    4) Apple is being a ******* for failing to write an EFI that lets you boot with a messed up HDD in the system
    5) Leave feedback: http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

Question: Does kext helper mess with version numbers? (To coax the kernel into believing it's the right version.) I used it to install 10.6.2 versions of the drivers but the System Profiler lists them as 10.6.6 nevertheless.

I guess it remains to be seen whether Apple fixes this problem with the next point update. But in the meantime, BLESS YOU!, KrzysiuTurek, for figuring this out and sharing the process for the fix. Risky? Maybe--but after 9+ months of enduring repeated freezes on anything later than 10.6.2, I was more than happy to make some redundant backups and give it a try. And I've now been freeze-free for 10 days, first on 10.6.5, and now on 10.6.6.

With a combination of other suggested fixes, I'd managed to get my screen freezes down to a few times a week, as opposed to a few times a day. But that meant that I was still holding my breath and gritting my teeth (and hitting command-S obsessively), knowing that it was just a matter of time. Now with 10 days of solid, stable performance behind me, I'm finally able to relax and breathe. Bliss!

BTW, I used Pacifist to extract the appropriate kexts from the 10.6.2 combo updater package, and installed into 10.6.5. Worked like a charm.

I've suffered two white screen moments and a black screen moment in the last week, and after reading this thread, I've submitted my feedback as suggested - here's hoping for an end to this issue soon....

Has anyone tested this fix with GeForce kext?

I am currently stuck on 10.6.2 cannot move up as system freezes spinning ball etc.

did have some relief for 2 days by removing flash/shockwave in 10.6.6 but problem came back.
