Q: 24" iMac Screen Freezes since 10.6.3 update - pls help!

I don't know if this is just coincidence or not, but since updating my iMac to 10.6.3 it keeps on crashing. On 3 separate occasions today, whilst using my Mac the screen has gone completely black with thin white lines down it.....see pic below:

http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/6SYzhCgVYEU5TBKqRfOQ1Q?feat=directlink

The fans and hard disk are still running but it will not respond to any keyboard or mouse presses - I simply have to turn it off by holding the power button in.
It will then restart as usual.

Anyone got any ideas? Do you think that if I was to re-install Mac OS X from my original install disk it could solve the issue?

Thanks

Darren

@Vurey.... I just DL the 10.7 Lion Preview as well... Any update have you experienced any freezing when running Lion?

I didn't have any freezes in the couple of hours I was using it last week, but because all of my apps/documents etc are on my 10.6.6 partition, I haven't been using it much. I'll give it a proper runaround this weekend and let you know.

Contradictionary to what I concluded previously, the update to Safari 5.0.4 together with the other measures I took has not solved the problem. Another freeze-up just happened, requiring forced shutdown.

    Hi,

I have an iMac9,1 with NVIDIA GeForce GT 130. I have tried different solutions and nothing works. I just have to try to keep my computer cool ... So, I tried installing 10.7 and it gets worse, as soon as I started the machine in the new OS I started getting the screen flickering and it froze up. I tried a fresh install, and installing over 10.6.2 (external HD)

Hello. Just to let you know that I was using the 10.7 Lion preview over the weekend and I had no problems with screen freezes. It's not ready for prime time yet, but a pretty decent OS nonetheless. You probably won't want to use it as your main OS yet though.

VUREY: Thanks for the update, i ended up installing Lion on an Ext. HDD and had similar results. Over the weekend running on 10.6.6 i had a few freezes. While running Lion i had no freezes. Not ready for it to be my primary OS yet though...

Has anyone (developers) tried the new update 10.6.7?

The beta version was released yesterday. I really hope Apple has fixed the problem...!

For me was a horrible experience... However, I try something else... I unplugged my iMac and plugged back while holding power button (my fan started running at max speed, iStat Menus didn't see any sensor), then I reset the smc and the computer has been running for almost 12 hours without any freeze. Last night I tried running different apps that use to bring the temp sensors up very quickly and the computer behave normally. BTW, the fans are running at their standard speed.
I have done smc reset before but never after speeding up the fans and turning of all sensors.
I'll try 10.7 again and see as well.

    Best regards,

    I'm on 10.6.7, I'll let you know if I get a freeze.

Note: I also did not previously take any of the steps listed in this thread to "fix" the problem.

    Installed 10.6.7
    So far, no freezes.
It looks like the ATI Radeon 2400 drivers were updated for 10.6.7 by Apple on January 27th, 2011. (Old kext version was 1.6.26.22, new version is 1.6.26.31)

We'll see if this puppy is stable, otherwise it's back to reinserting the 10.6.2 drivers again. The updated drivers are promising, but I can't say I have much hope here.
