Apr 26, 2011 10:32 AM in response to spokes46by mediaguru2,I suggest everyone copy and paste the letter and email it through the http://www.apple.com/feedback site. If Apple were to get the identical report from many many users it might make an impact...

Apr 26, 2011 10:34 AM in response to jaycee1980by spokes46,I hope not because it's a legitimate complaint.
So, who do we send it to?

Apr 29, 2011 1:54 AM in response to DazzaGby LePop,Hello Add me to the list. 5 days lots reinstalling, deleting, rebooting after many years withour any problem...how do you call people upset...unswitchers ?
Seriously I don't understand anything with this issue : nothing reproductible, except perhaps the fact it comes when I reinstall Little snitch but before that I see some slow dows in safari, typing text...?
If I reinstall Leopard without update (10.6.0) it seems to be stable. My imac seems to me hot also but I did'nt take care about that before I should say ??

May 2, 2011 5:00 PM in response to CWGuideby geychaner,I have an iMac 7,1 (20", 2.0 Ghz, ATI2400), and have been experiencing many of the problems noted in this thread:
- Screen turns dark with Mac still running (can be logged into remotely), as though about to go to sleep.
- Screen turns white with colored vertical pinstripes, computer still running.
- Screen freezes, but sounds continue to play (frequent when using Parallels).
I tried a few things, which seemed to cause less frequent crashes, but did not get rid of them:
- Removed iStat Menus from the machine.
- Removed the Logitech and Kensington trackball drivers.
In the end, I still had freezes. I applied the solution posted; I hope this solves the freezing problem (won't know for a few days, obviously). Thanks to whoever posted the 10.6.2 kext files; I was a late adapter of Snow Leopard, and have a 10.6.3 install disk as part of the boxed set.
I did notice that in addition to the three listed kexts, my machine also leads ATIRadeonX2000.kext; I did NOT replace this file, nor did I replace the seemingly associated bundles in the /System/Library/Extensions folder (not having a 10.6.2 copy of them). Will try to post an update if it freezes again, or in a week if I can go that long without freezes.

May 3, 2011 12:03 PM in response to DazzaGby Tardigrada,Just want to add my case here. I had nearly daily system freezes (sometimes vertical stripes, sometimes the entire screen in one color like black/white/blue, sometimes just normal content but frozen) on my iMac8,1 (ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro) for over a year now. Installing the kext files from 10.6.2 (in my case ATI2600Controller.kext, ATIFramebuffer.kext, and ATISupport.kext) resulted in no more freezes (since five weeks now).
Furthermore I want to add these proposals to the options what we can do (and obviously not have done yet):
- We should apply the new "Like" functionality at least to the workaround post to indicate the importance of this issue.
- We should apply the new "Bookmark" functionality to this thread/topic to indicate the importance of this issue (currently only done by 3 users).
- The thread starter should attach the new "Helpful Answer" attribute to the workaround post.

May 4, 2011 11:35 AM in response to DazzaGby ikerf,The fix didn`t work for me. I`m running 10.6.7, ATI 2600, iMac 2008. I have never had a frozen screen however, nor stripes or any graphic glitches. But whenever I open a photo in Preview or muck about in iPhoto the circus arrives with the beachball and it`s restart on the cards. I `ve lost data, reinstalled prayed, cried ,cursed etc but nothing gives. We all try to be diplomatic about this but can`t we just pull an Erin Brokovich and sue Apple? Enough is enough, we ain`t deaf & dumb and nothing is being done but being saddled with a bricked iMac. I will not stand for this.

May 4, 2011 12:08 PM in response to ikerfby spokes46,This is clearly a different problem than the freeze many of us have had and fixed with kext file solution, i.e., random stops, lines, black, pink, etc.

May 4, 2011 1:27 PM in response to spokes46by ikerf,I thought so in hope too at first, but there are similiar symptoms which mirror the video card problem. The problems stem from the same root. I have donned every imaginable remedy too my iMac but nothing works. It's ugly twins spawned from the same ******* seed, I am convinced. The card, the update, the video abnormalities, the same family.
I'm writing this on my phone, the iMac froze a few minutes ago and I can't be bothered starting up again. "Will it blend?" is my only thought.

May 4, 2011 10:19 PM in response to ikerfby Tardigrada,This thread is about certain system freezes. If your mouse cursor (beach ball) still moves, it doesn't sound like a problem with the graphics card. Also installing the old (10.6.2) kernel extensions (aka drivers) didn't help in your case. So this sounds really different. If a search doesn't help, I suggest to start a new thread.

May 5, 2011 10:44 AM in response to LePopby Harkaitz,Has anyone tried to install this kext on lion? (Some users have confirmed that the freezing continues on Lion...) Works the 10.6.2 Kexts on it?

May 12, 2011 11:28 AM in response to DazzaGby sneakydan,Can't believe it's taken me until now to actually come across this thread. So many crashes I finally started investigating and searching.
This is obviously a well known issue. Seriously Apple, cop on!

May 12, 2011 11:34 AM in response to geychanerby geychaner,10 days; no freezes, crashes, or other bad behavior, despite heavy use of the computer (I have been home sick). The ATI .kext files are almost certainly the problem.

May 12, 2011 11:44 AM in response to geychanerby spokes46,No freezes in over a month with .kext fix. No doubt about the problem. Is Apple listening?

May 26, 2011 6:49 AM in response to DazzaGby michaeljaekel,Hi, I have to join this list.
Someone mentioned a letter that should be send to the support. Where can I find this letter?
So much freezing with my 24" iMac (late 2008) since 10.6.3. I'm already in contact with the apple care "support" (since last Sept!). Managed to get my logic board changed - no result. Still freezing.
PC is freezing zp to 3-5 times a day - and then works fine for some days.
Support says, I have to run a clean install, with no software installed except OS and apple own software and reproduce the freeze!!! Sorry, but this is a productive PC and I' can't sit in front of my PC and do nothing because I don't have any software installed.
Apple's support sent me a special logfile tool (Capture Data) to generate a post crash logfile. I sent in serveral log files ... reaction of support was: "yes, we see it is freezing and it can't even display a kernel panic message. But you have to reproduce the freeze with a clean installation" AAARGGGHH.
I tried to get the support team looking at this thread, just to say: hey, it's not me only.... they ignore this thread totally. @ spokes46: APPLE IS NOT LISTENING!!!
Now I try the graphic driver's replacement. Hope this will work. Thanks to CWGUIDE for this hint!
