May 30, 2011 2:27 AM in response to michaeljaekelby Mac,Just rolled back the kernel drivers as before, after getting numerous crashes (my wife uses the desktop and kept complaining that it had started again). I didn't realise there had been an update and so I'm hoping this will put an end to the problem...

May 31, 2011 7:46 AM in response to DazzaGby michaeljaekel,Is there any hope, that 10.7 (or even 10.6.8) will help us out of this problem?
I found "graphic drivers" mentioned in the list of focus areas for 10.6.8.
Does anyone have first information on that?

Jun 1, 2011 4:33 PM in response to CWGuideby Bradley Miller,Like all of you, I have been wrestling with this issue since Snow Leopard. I often say that "Snow Leopard ruined me iMac". I have tried various clean installs, resetting SMC and PRAM all to no avail.
I will try this and hope for the best.
Why does Apple fail to acknowledge this? This is what baffles me.
Thanks,
Brad

Jun 4, 2011 2:50 PM in response to DazzaGby jnik,This is just a "Me-Too" post. Running a 20inch iMac 2.66GHzM ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro. After a lot of "Umming and Urring", have finally updated to Snow Leopard a few months ago (6.3 DVD with the subsequent download of 6.7) and what do you know?! - The iMac i've had since 2008 and was totally loving started to crash and freeze (with all the symptoms described above: lines across the screen, jumbled sound and pic, black screens - will no response and a power reboot as the only "fix"). Freaked me out at first, but then came to realise i'm not alone. Seems to be coming at random. Doing the SMC re-set and setting the auto-sleep time to "Never" have actually made me go without a crash for about 3 weeks, but then last week it started again!!! (My iMac was an insomniac, so that's why the sleep setting above, as i (naively?) suspected that the crashes were somewhat aligned with when it wanted to go to sleep.... Have sent a message to Apple support referring to this thread, but no answer....... Scary if won't be fixed in Lion!!

Jun 8, 2011 12:18 PM in response to DazzaGby Harkaitz,Well, finally I´ve just Installed Lion Preview 4.
I dont know if the freezes persist, I just installed it and patched it directly with the 10.6.2 Kexts and... They work!!
My imac is a 8.1 24" 2.8 with radeon 2600pro.
I´ll continue testing!

Jun 8, 2011 2:22 PM in response to DazzaGby Eminemdrdre00,Apple released an iMac graphics update today:
It's right here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1389
MacRumors says it's for the new 2011 iMacs, but should we try it on our failing 2008 iMacs? It sounds like the problem we've been experiencing!
In certain circumstances, your iMac (Mid 2011) may become unresponsive on startup, with a white or gray background on the display. You may also notice vertical lines on the display while using your iMac.
Update: Nevermind I just tried to install the update on my 2008 iMac but the installer wouldn't run.

Jun 8, 2011 2:37 PM in response to Eminemdrdre00by Tardigrada,The only similarity I can see is the word “hang”. Nobody in this thread described problems “during startup or waking from sleep”, right?
Sorry, I didn't see the “vertical lines on the display while using your iMac” description on the page with the problem report …

Jun 9, 2011 7:56 AM in response to Harkaitzby spokes46,I've got the same machine.
Let us know because we can't buy Lion w/o knowing if the fix will work.
I remain shocked that Apple hasn't addressed this.

Jun 15, 2011 11:11 AM in response to spokes46by Harkaitz,Still alive with the "patched" Lion.
It works like a charm, no black screen freezes (not even a freeze, not bad for a developer preview runnig from an USB!!).
By the way, this OS activates by default the 64bit kernel & 64 bit Kexts

Jun 16, 2011 7:19 PM in response to Harkaitzby Eminemdrdre00,Can you try it on Lion without the 10.6.2 kext "patch". We want to know if Lion finally fixes our issue.
-
Jun 17, 2011 12:30 AM in response to Eminemdrdre00by Tardigrada,User jaycee1980 reported persisting problems without the patch, at least with Lion Dev Preview 2.
-
Jun 17, 2011 1:50 AM in response to Eminemdrdre00by Harkaitz,This was more a "let´s see if the patch still works on Lion".
I´ll try without patching on the final version.
