Jul 3, 2011 9:30 PM in response to SeSamby zaneka,I've taken my iMac in 3 times for repairs since installing 10.6.7 after Christmas. Had to update because of iPhoto 11--and I'm still having problems. Original issues were screen freezes, or screen turned pale green with thin black stripes. I have been assured by 3 repair techs that my fan is fine--but top of unit gets hot--even after 20 minutes of use. Don't understand how to do the things yodog did--and afraid to mess up. Guess I'll be going back to repairs--which is tough because I am a bit disabled and carting the iMac 24 is a problem. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be grateful!
Repairs done were new Video card, ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro and new Logic Board 2.8 GHz plus checking all updates, etc were ok.

Jul 3, 2011 10:12 PM in response to zanekaby Tardigrada,It's difficult to say if your iMac gets too hot. But you could do some monitoring.
Another suggestion: make a backup. If things go wrong, you will be able to restore your system.

Jul 4, 2011 8:11 AM in response to DazzaGby TK111,Under warranty, I got a new ATI 2600 Pro graphics card recently, because I had extensively documented all my freezes for 9 months. In May I had a month of no freezes with 10.6.7 and the kext fix. After I got the repaired graphics card home I updated to 10.6.8 and had no problems, but was too nervous about getting a freeze, so I did the 64-bit kernel setting and reapplied the kext fixes. I feel more at ease now. It's not that hard and much thanks to people who first pointed out these bits.
Here's how to tell if your Mac supports the 64-bit kernel:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3770
And here's how to set your Mac to 64-bit kernel or back again to 32-bit:

Jul 4, 2011 9:45 AM in response to TK111by TK111,P.S., I tried holding down the 6 and the 4 while booting, but it didn't seem to work. "About This Mac" still reported a 32-bit kernel after that. But the terminal commands did work and 64-bit kernel is reported.

Jul 7, 2011 7:45 AM in response to DazzaGby vexbit,I just wanted to let you know that I've been running the GM of Lion for the last week or so on my iMac 7,1 which was experiencing the exact freezes which have been discussed here.
I've had no issues running Lion - It's replaced the drivers, and everything seems to be working a-OK (I'm running the 64bit kernel). One caveat is that I replaced both memory modules with 4GB (2x2GB paired) with Patriot memory (I was running 3GB Crucial memory beforehand), shortly before upgrading, so please take that into consideration too.
Thanks,
Soen

I understand that you applied the kext fix?

Jul 7, 2011 2:31 PM in response to Harkaitzby vexbit,Yes, that's correct. I had previously applied the kext fix, although it appears that the Lion installer has replaced those drivers.

In that case you are running WITHOUT the kext fix. Every version update changes the ATI kexts for new ones.
If it continues stable would be great!!

Hello, can you run 64bit kernel in iMac 7,1? Can you run 64bit kernel in Snow Leopard as well, or in Lion only? Because 64bit kernel is according to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3770 not possible in iMac 7,1. Thanks.

Jul 15, 2011 10:02 PM in response to DazzaGby I am Mac,This has been a frustrating experience for me as well. Never thought this would happen to an apple product :-( So I reformatted my hard drive and re-installed the OS, however this continues to happen with lines appearing across the screen and then the computer just freezes up and I have to do a hard reboot. I took it to the Genius bar and the advisor told me to buy a $700 replacement to the screen.

Jul 16, 2011 9:24 AM in response to I am Macby spokes46,Read the discussion and determine if what you have is the same as the freeze primarily discussed, and if you have that problem, don't replace anything other than those kexts. The fix works.

Jul 16, 2011 9:31 AM in response to spokes46by Eclipsethegalaxy,I am an artist and musician. I have no idea how to replace kexts. I don't even know what a kext is. I'm just waiting for Lion, hoping it solves this ongoing problem so many have. I told an Apple rep over the phone that they should follow the discussion. He had me running in circles even taking the iMac in for service which did nothing to stop the freeze ups. He didn't seem aware of an issue !!

Jul 16, 2011 9:40 AM in response to Eclipsethegalaxyby TK111,No excuse. It's explained pretty thoroughly in this thread, which is very long by now, I know. This page is the best explanation of the procedure that I've found:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2384136?start=405&tstart=0
Backup your system. Then follow the instructions exactly. Worked for me.
