Jul 20, 2011 12:57 PM in response to DazzaGby Simon Baker,I successfully re-installed the 10.6.2 kexts on 10.6.8, but last week did a 10.6.8 reinstall without any kext changes. I have been in 64 bit mode for ages. It ran for about 3 days before good wife reported a freeze. I checked the Console logs but nothing reported. This evening it froze again but we left it running for 10 minutes before a hard reboot. The Console log reported a GPU debug (clock froze at 18.33.16, GPU debug reported from 18.33.30.) Same old, same old for me.
Be interested to see how people get on with Lion…

Jul 20, 2011 1:11 PM in response to DazzaGby Tarascon,Interestingly enough, I had never had this problem until I switched to Lion. On the other hand, I had my new iMac for only a month or so before updating to Lion. Now my Mac freezes every other day requiring reboot and it is clearly related to the GPU. The freezes are almost universially triggered by launching some video- in iTunes, a browser, etc- not the same app.

Jul 20, 2011 3:41 PM in response to Tarasconby rubenlx,I have been hit exaclty with the same problem as Tarascon: OS X Lion, 2011 iMac, random freeze when playing some video (iTunes, Browser, QuickTime).
The cursor still moves but the computer doesn't respond to anything, requiring me to hit the power button to turn the computer off and on again. Seriously not happy with this...

Exactly. Same here.

Jul 20, 2011 7:00 PM in response to Tarasconby TK111,You guys seem to be talking about different iMacs, not the 24" iMacs. And how did you update to Lion before today? It was just released today.
If you have 2011 iMacs and problems with Lion, it seems like you should start a new thread and not confuse this one.

Jul 20, 2011 7:16 PM in response to TK111by Tarascon,Lion GM has been out for awhile. What makes you think this driver issue has anything to do with the size of the monitor?
-
Jul 20, 2011 7:22 PM in response to DazzaGby franmanster,if a new thread gets started, thats cool, but I can verify that my 2011 27" imac is stricken with the movable mouse cursor, but completely frozen screen, that you have discussed prior.
console shows multiple gpu debug dumps.
this only happens when viewing videos of some sort.

Jul 20, 2011 7:36 PM in response to Tarasconby TK111,What makes you think this driver issue has anything to do with the size of the monitor?
The title of the thread for one thing, plus the fact that all the discussion has been about iMac8,1 and sometimes iMac7,1, with the drivers for the ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro and its sisters. Plus the fact that almost no one else has talked about a frozen screen with a movable cursor. So if you don't know, then read the thread!
Whatever iMac you have, you don't say. You don't say what graphics card you have, or what drivers it's using. So when I say you're confusing the thread, it's true.

Jul 20, 2011 8:43 PM in response to TK111by Tarascon,Ok, pal- you're confused. We get it. Can we now move on?
We are talking about faulty ATI drivers evers since 10.6.3 which persists into the new iMac line and Lion. This is how I see it. If uou have anything to add to this discussion- please do. If not, let's stop this nonsense.

Jul 20, 2011 9:26 PM in response to Tarasconby TK111,If you weren't a complete tool, then YOU would contribute with a little information, such as what I asked:
What's your machine?
What's your GPU?
What are your drivers?
Have you tried the kext fix detailed in this thread?
What was the result?
Or haven't you bothered to read anything at all? Your posts are usless without some details, unless you just want to complain about something like a typical troll.

Jul 21, 2011 1:24 AM in response to DazzaGby CWGuide,So I have just installed Lion on my 2007 iMac. No freezes so far but then again I haven't really been testing it. One thing I noticed however is a new option in the Energy Saver section of system preferences:
I know this really dosen't help solve the problem but it's interesting that Apple added this option as I've never seen it before. I'll let you guys know if I get any freezes.

Jul 21, 2011 4:15 AM in response to CWGuideby bobtibb,Hi all. Just wanted to update on my system, 20inch iMac 8.1; 2.66GHz; ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro. 10.6.7 with the 10.6.2 kexts installed. It has been three weeks now and I still have two tails wagging! I haven't upgraded to 10.6.8 as I was concerned that some of my software wouldn't work in 64-bit mode... if this is the case, then will I have the same problem with these software packages with Lion in 64-bit mode. If so, then would I be better sticking with 10.6.7 with the 10.6.2 kexts? It seems like opening a can of worms upgrading these days!! Still very happy that the fix works for me. Is the stip into lion country worth it one wonders?! Bob

Jul 21, 2011 9:11 AM in response to Tarasconby bumina,I am still getting random freezes on my system in lion with my 7,1 imac. The freezes are different in that the mouse still works, but clicking on anything on the screen does nothing. It is obviously a GPU driver issue because I did not have the issue when running 10.6.2 and the console application has a huge debug memory dump that is preceded by:
Jul 21 03:04:54 machine_name kernel[0]: ** Device in slot: SLOT--1 **
Jul 21 03:04:54 machine_name kernel[0]: ** GPU Debug Info Start **
So the issue is not fixed in Lion . Waste of $30.
