Q: 24" iMac Screen Freezes since 10.6.3 update - pls help!

I don't know if this is just coincidence or not, but since updating my iMac to 10.6.3 it keeps on crashing. On 3 separate occasions today, whilst using my Mac the screen has gone completely black with thin white lines down it.....see pic below:

http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/6SYzhCgVYEU5TBKqRfOQ1Q?feat=directlink

The fans and hard disk are still running but it will not respond to any keyboard or mouse presses - I simply have to turn it off by holding the power button in.
It will then restart as usual.

Anyone got any ideas? Do you think that if I was to re-install Mac OS X from my original install disk it could solve the issue?

Thanks

Darren

Lion enables 64-bit mode on my imac 7,1 which is still crashing from time to time.  I will try the kext fix the next time I get a system freeze which should be sometime today.

It is interesting, though, that the problem is manifesting in a slightly different way, and that it may be occurring on 2011 iMacs as well.  Maybe if it is a widespread problem on 2011 iMacs Apple will be more inclined to pursue a solution that may help us with our 2007 and 2008 iMacs.

Hi all. Just wanted to update on my system, 20inch iMac 8.1; 2.66GHz; ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro. 10.6.7 with the 10.6.2 kexts installed. It has been three weeks now and I still have two tails wagging! I haven't upgraded to 10.6.8 as I was concerned that some of my software wouldn't work in 64-bit mode...

It's easy to find out without updating to 10.6.8. Just hold key 6 and key 4 while booting (until the apple appears). Then check if it worked by opening the System Profiler, then clicking on Software. If the line which starts with 64-bit ends with Yes, you're running the 64 bit kernel until next reboot. Now you can test all your software …

My computer crashed at around 11am.  I am posting on my linux box so you can guess how things went from there.  Using old kext files in lion for my 7,1 mac meant that my computer now hangs during boot.  I'm going to try and roll back to 10.6.2 and restore from backups.  This issue is not fixed in any Apple OS past 10.6.2 on my imac 7,1.  I doubt apple will ever fix this problem.  If I write a longer post I will probably just start swearing so I'll stop.

Has anybody tried the 10.6.2 driver with Lion?

Yup, I´ve installed them on my 8.1 imac with the retail release of Lion. They work perfect.

I installed them not because of any hangig, made it because I was suffering some jerky animation when minimizing applications after letting the imac to sleep.

I always wonder about early adopters. I never saw a stable OS with only one dot in the version number …

Early adopters... so it's our fault now? We are beta testing their graphic drivers since 10.6.3. I think it's save to say that we gave them enough time to get stable. Trying out 10.7 is not because we feel adventurous.. call it desperate measures.

Hello, I can confirm, that Mac 7,1 is running 64bit by default. I have Lion such a short time that I cannot reply if it is still freezing or not.

I had freeze ups since 10.6.3 on a 24 in iMac. Again with 10.6.8 and now with Lion. And I have not changed or tested any drivers. I only get them when trying to run Skype. Nothing else seems to cause it.

Has anyone been running lion successfully without freezes?  If so..did you use kext files from 10.6.2?  I need to decided if I'm going to upgrade. My graphics card is the ATI 2400. iMac 7,1. Thanks.

    Hey Chris,

I have the same mac as you (or close enough) and have upgraded to lion.

I implemented the kext fix while running snow leopard then upgraded to a new graphics update after. Now I've installed lion.

It's day two and I've run Final Cut Pro and quicktime and youtube at the same time while in some of the hottest weather our city has experienced (the mac fans were actually making noise they were working so hard) and it has not frozen yet.

This of course dose not mean it's fixed just that I haven't experienced any of the freezes yet (also lion is amazing and seems to be making my mac run EVEN BETTER THAN BEFORE!)

Hope this helps you make a decision

    Hi Chris,

I have the exact same imac as you.  Lion did not fix my freezing issue and I am currently reversing my lion install back to 10.6.2.  Hope that helps you make an informed decision.

iMac 8,1 with the ATI 2600 Pro and I'm pleased to report that I've not frozen once this week. I'm a developer so I've had access the GM build and moved my iMac over last Saturday, and have not had any issues, where I was still having issues with 10.6.8.

    We'll see how it goes.
