Q: 24" iMac Screen Freezes since 10.6.3 update - pls help!

I don't know if this is just coincidence or not, but since updating my iMac to 10.6.3 it keeps on crashing. On 3 separate occasions today, whilst using my Mac the screen has gone completely black with thin white lines down it.....see pic below:

http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/6SYzhCgVYEU5TBKqRfOQ1Q?feat=directlink

The fans and hard disk are still running but it will not respond to any keyboard or mouse presses - I simply have to turn it off by holding the power button in.
It will then restart as usual.

Anyone got any ideas? Do you think that if I was to re-install Mac OS X from my original install disk it could solve the issue?

Thanks

Darren

I'm trying to be as detailed as possible :-) It's been awhile! After I replaced the files I left it that way till the next apple update that promised graphics driver improvements, I believe it was version 10.6.7. And now I have lion.

Also my driver (ATI2400Controller.kext) says it's version 7.2.9

I would like to go back and try that and I have even went to update the graphics with the download, but it will not let me.  Box says that my graphics do not need to be updated.  You may have gotten lucky I guess, or you did it the right way...either way, good job!

Just had my 2nd freeze of the day. This time is was a Snow Leopard type of freeze. My entire screen went black, couldn't see my mouse or anything. Had to do a hard reboot. My AppleCare is up on August 12th. Is it worth calling/driving an hour to my nearest Apple store? We know this isn't a hardware issue, it's a bad ATI driver.

I'd hate to report it, but 10.6.8 in 64 bit mode eventually hung with the moving cursor issue and required a hard restart. It took about 4 days to manifest. I'm running an early 2008 iMac 24" (8,1) model with a ATI Radeon 2600 Pro video card and (now) stock KEXT files.

So from there, I upgraded to LION, and have had roughly daily freezes since. The issue doesn't appear to be fixed in Lion, either.

Drive to the store if you've got the time! Point them to this thread (with its 150,000+ views and 650+ posts) and to the success people have had with replacing the KEXT files (don't let on that you've replaced them though, or they'll send you away).

Also, it looks like the new 2011 iMacs are having similar problems. They've just released a firmware update for those (and no, they can't be applied to our 8,1 iMacs)

Since I got a new GPU on 2 July, have had no freezes with any configuration (but one kernel panic). Four days now with stock kexts on Lion.
