Jul 25, 2011 6:57 PM in response to DazzaGby k3bs,iMac 7,1 - 32bit locked
ATI,RadeonHD2600
ROM-Version: 113-B2250F-219
EFI-Driverversion: 01.00.219
**GPU Debug** Freeze since 10.6.3
Current OS Version 10.6.7 (32bit)
Running stable with 10.6.2 KEXTs
Questions:
- Did someone try 10.7.x with the same system?
- Did you try to install the 10.6.2 kext files on 10.7?
- If you had Kernel Panic, did you try to start in 32bit?
Any feedback would be highly appreciated. Some of the questions have been asked and in theory it should work, but i had to ask again cause aside from the GPU freeze the 7,1 series is stuck in 32bit so its not even possible to go 10.6.8 which makes installing extra difficult.
Thanks

Just installed on an imac 7.1 with 2600pro and working with 10.6.2 Kexts.
There was a user having problems with the patch but on my 7.1 never failed (even on lion betas).

Jul 26, 2011 10:06 AM in response to Harkaitzby Chris J.,Did you just do the kext replacement the exact same way you had done before in Snow Leopard? I wonder if the 2600 works different than my 2400? Because the 10.6.2 kext would not work for me in 10.6.8. I got a Kernel Panic. My iMac is also 7,1 Let us know if you have any problems.

On SL 10.6.8 the patch doesnt work on a 7.1 because you have to switch SL to 64bit, and it´s more complicated on a 7.1 machine than on a 8.1 machine.
Lion works on 64 bit mode on both 8.1 and 7.1 imacs, so the patch works ok for them.
I dont know how does it work on a radeon 2400. If I were you, I´d install Lion on a USB hard drive and test if the patch works on your system.
The kext must be changed with "kext helper b7". I always use that little program and always work for me!

Jul 26, 2011 10:40 AM in response to Harkaitzby johnckendall,My 7,1 is still freezing under lion with and without the 10.6.2 kept files. Always happens during an os animation. So sad...

Jul 26, 2011 11:36 AM in response to DazzaGby Ea$y,I have Mac 10.7 and lately its gotten super slow. I upgraded to Lion. I'll click to safari, and for the longest time I get the apple wheel spinning. After some 20 seconds, it will open. I just tried to open the APPS store site, and it came on with only text and not graphics, the wheel spinning for ten seconds, and finally the grapics come out. Same with Mail and ICal.
I've had the problem even before upgrading to Lion.
I was thinking of taking it to the Apple store for a checkup, but would rather try to fix it at home. Any ideas?

Jul 27, 2011 9:39 PM in response to DazzaGby Chris J.,Ok....Here is what I did last night. I was operating on 10.6.7 with 10.6.2 kext installed. I installed Lion from 10.6.7 and skipped 10.6.8. About 5 minutes after starting lion I had a freeze...UGH! So, I restarted and the first thing I did was install the kext from 10.6.2 and did a restart. Have not had a freeze since and its been over a day. System is operating great and very smooth. It may still freeze, but so far I am keeping my fingers crossed! As I said in previous post, my iMac is mid 2007 20 inch 7,1 with Radeon 2400.

Jul 28, 2011 5:21 AM in response to Chris J.by johnckendall,I have this exact setup and the 10.6.2 kext's make the freezing happen even more often. Did you just replace the 3 files: ATISupport, ATI2400Controller and ATIFramebuffer?
-
Jul 28, 2011 5:38 AM in response to johnckendallby Chris J.,Yes that is all that I did...just replaced the three files. That is not to say it won't freeze but im 2 days in and have had nothing bad so far. I have put this machine through the hoops to. I have had 8 applications open at once, and most were graphic intensive applications such as iphoto. I scrolled as fast as I could to try and get it to freeze up. I even played a graphic intensive game online (TIger Woods Online)

Jul 28, 2011 5:41 AM in response to Chris J.by johnckendall,I find that using Mission Control most often causes the freezes. Also, safari seems like it triggers the freeze as well. Have you been using Mission Control much?

Jul 28, 2011 5:45 AM in response to Chris J.by W S H,Hey Chris, I'm on exactly the same system as you and would love to hear how it goes over the next couple days. I have 10.6.7 running now with the kext replacement. A while back, I tried to upgrade to 10.6.8, but got a bunch of kernel panics even with the kext replacement. Then I consulted this thread and saw the discussion of 32/64 bit issue with 10.6.8. Frankly, that was a step too far for me, and so I decided just to revert to 10.6.7 with the kext replacement. If I can now skip 10.6.8 and go to 10.7 with just the kext change, and no 32/64 bit stuff, that would be ideal. If not, I'll stay with 10.6.7 for a while. If you have a chance to give an update in the next couple days it would be great to know how it's working. I'm on a 20" 7.1 with Radeon 2400, same as yours, I think.

Jul 28, 2011 5:52 AM in response to johnckendallby Chris J.,yes I have been using it often because I had read that was a problem for other users, plus it is a awesome feature and Safari is extremely fast and hasn't cause any problems...yet! Until I am a week in, I hesitate to be overly optimistic!

Jul 28, 2011 5:59 AM in response to W S Hby Chris J.,WSH, I got the kernel panics with 10.6.8 also and had to revert back to 10.6.7 with the kext. I was under the impression that you had to be running the latest software version in order to get Lion, but when I read it only had to be 10.6.6 or higher, I went for it. The 32/64 bit must be a issue because with the 7,1 it is hard and complicated to get 64 bit in 10.6.8 so that is why we were getting the kernel panics in my opinion. If you start from 10.6.7 and just upgrade and immediately do the kext like I did, you may get it working because it automatically sets the OS to 64 bit. Fact is though, working iMac or not, it is ridiculous that we have to even worry about this because it should be working without having to jump through hoops
And yes you are correct, we are running the exact same iMac version and I will let you know after the weekend
